“Hjulmand stands firm as the captain of Sporting in all battles.”

Sporting is going through tumultuous times, and at the center of this upheaval is Danish player Mikkel Hjulmand, a captain who stands as a true leader, ready to face any battle. The turning point began on February 1, during the match against Nacional, a date that coincided with the closing of the winter transfer window. The situation became explosive when Hjulmand’s agent revealed the possibility of an offer from Atlético de Madrid, something that visibly unsettled the player and put the club’s management on high alert.

Following the agent’s communication, the management of the Lisbon club, led by coach Rui Borges, decided collectively to exclude Hjulmand from the match. The measure, although drastic, aimed to protect the player in light of an uncertain situation. “By our decision, we chose to leave him out of the squad to protect him in some way. It’s a non-issue. It was a decision made by all for personal reasons. Tomorrow he will be at training and on Thursday he will be in the game, he will definitely be a starter, I hope nothing happens to him in training,” Rui Borges emphasized after the game.

In the conversation with the Danish player, Borges assured Hjulmand that the confidence in his leadership ability and professionalism remained intact. The coach reaffirmed that, despite any doubts that may have arisen, Hjulmand would continue to be the captain, given his positive influence on the group and the respect he has earned among his teammates. And so it was: shortly after, Hjulmand started in the Taça de Portugal against Aves SAD and also in the fiery classic against FC Porto.

Although fans and critics have noted that Hjulmand has been experiencing a less positive moment in terms of form, Borges and the club’s management emphasized that this is more due to physical overload than to psychological issues related to a potential transfer. With 3,356 minutes accumulated between Sporting and the Denmark national team, Hjulmand is undoubtedly the most utilized player in the squad. While Trincão has more minutes with the Lions, his presence in the national team is significantly lower.

Now, with weeks of rest between matches, as was the case before the clash with Moreirense and now with Estoril, the expectation is that Hjulmand will regain his level of excellence. His performance was already noticeable in Moreira de Cónegos, where he was not only influential on the field but also in leading the group.

With his departure expected in the summer, Hjulmand will continue to be a key player in Sporting’s fight for the three-peat, always with an unwavering commitment that is recognized by all. The future may be uncertain, but one thing is clear: the Danish captain is determined to make his mark this season.
