Jérémy Mathieu, the former central defender of Sporting, is going through a turbulent time in his life, which has led him to work in a sports shop in Aiz-en-Provence, in the south of France. Recently, the player, who left his mark at renowned clubs such as Barcelona and Valencia, revealed in an interview on the “Safe Play” program of beIN Sports France that he is facing a legal process that has forced him to change direction.
In clear and direct statements, Mathieu said: “I can’t talk much about it. If I’m at Intersport, it’s because something is happening and it’s causing me a lot of problems.” This intriguing revelation raises questions about what is really happening in the life of the former player, who, after his career, faced a period of depression and the need to reintegrate socially. With a voice visibly affected by the situation, he shared that the invitation to work at the store came from Loïc Loval-Landré, a former locker room mate at Sochaux, who was aware of his struggle to return to an active life.
“I tried to stay involved in football, like everyone else. In amateur football… He knew I wanted to get out of the house a bit, I hadn’t been doing anything for some time. And he told me there was a position at Intersport,” Mathieu revealed. His decision to accept the job, although temporary, underscores the urgency of finding a purpose and a routine after the end of his sporting career.
At 42 years old, Mathieu, who stood out at Sporting between 2017 and 2020, does not hide the fact that this job is not his final destination: “I’m not going to keep doing this for much longer, it was just to have a social life.” Mathieu’s story serves as a reminder of the fragility of life after professional football, where athletes often struggle to find their place in a world that has changed drastically.
As we follow Jérémy Mathieu’s journey, the hope is that he will be able to overcome the challenges he faces and rediscover his peace and purpose, away from the spotlight of football, but still connected to his passion. His struggle is a testament to the resilience needed to navigate the highs and lows of life, both on and off the field.
