Mourinho in trouble: Accusations of psychological manipulation against Vinícius Júnior.

José Mourinho has once again become the center of an explosive controversy in the world of football, this time involving young Brazilian talent Vinícius Júnior. The situation took a dramatic turn following Real Madrid’s victory over Benfica, where Vinícius not only scored the only goal of the match but also reported hearing a racist comment made by Prestianni, leading to the interruption of the game in accordance with UEFA protocols. Instead of expressing support for the player, Mourinho chose to criticize the exuberant celebration of the goal, suggesting that it had incited hostility from the fans.

The statements made by the Portuguese coach did not go unnoticed and sparked a wave of outrage on social media. The anti-racism charity, Kick It Out, expressed its support for Vinícius Júnior, accusing Mourinho of “psychological manipulation” in his handling of the situation. In a strong statement, the organization highlighted the importance of listening to and supporting those who report discrimination, emphasizing that diverting attention to the goal celebration instead of acknowledging the report is a form of “gaslighting.”

“When someone reports discrimination in football, or anywhere else, the first priority is that this person is heard and feels supported. Focusing on Vinícius Jr’s goal celebration or the club’s history, instead of recognizing the report, is a form of psychological manipulation,” the organization stated, clearly criticizing Mourinho’s behavior. The message is a call to action for football leaders, who play a crucial role in setting standards of respect and inclusion in the sport.

Furthermore, Kick It Out demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for appropriate accountability to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. “This approach not only harms the affected person but also sends the wrong message to others around the world who may have experienced similar situations,” they added, reinforcing the urgency for responsible leadership in football.

Asked whether Vinícius Júnior had incited the throwing of bottles by fans of Benfica, Mourinho did not hesitate to affirm that he had. “Unfortunately, he was not content with scoring that amazing goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate it respectfully. I told him that the greatest figure in the history of this club was black. The last thing this club is, is racist,” declared the coach, referring to the legend Eusébio.

This controversy not only raises questions about racism in football but also about the responsibility of coaches and public figures in dealing with situations of discrimination. The wait for an appropriate response from football authorities is now a growing expectation among fans and human rights advocates. Mourinho, a polarizing figure in sports, seems to be once again challenging the limits of ethics and respect in the world of football. The situation demands attention and action, as football should be a space of inclusion and respect, not of divisions and hostilities.
