Rui Borges reveals the harsh reality of injuries at Sporting: “Every now and then, the moles come out”

At the most delicate moment of the season, the coach of Sporting, Rui Borges, opens up about the challenges facing the Lions’ squad and the inevitable injuries that have affected the team’s performance. In exclusive statements, the coach does not hide his frustration and explains why some absences are simply impossible to control, even at a club with such a demanding structure as Sporting.

When questioned about the pressure on players who are not injured but are called upon to make extra efforts to cover for those missing, Rui Borges was direct: “How can you ask a player who is not injured to make an extra effort, knowing the team is stretched and that he is at risk of getting injured?” This question reveals the constant dilemma faced by coaches when the team is under high physical strain.

Regarding the January transfer market, the coach downplayed the idea that it has been a solution for the squad’s problems. “We had a balanced squad in all positions; I don’t think it’s really about the January market,” he stated, making it clear that the injuries were not a result of a lack of options, but rather of unpredictable events.

The clearest example of what Rui Borges refers to as “the moles come out” is the injury to Luís Guilherme, who suffered a traumatic injury during training, something the club could neither anticipate nor prevent. “There are things we cannot control,” emphasized the coach, highlighting that, despite precautions, football is a sport with permanent risks.

Rui Borges also highlighted the exemplary attitude of Daniel Bragança, a player who, even when physically limited, did not hesitate to step onto the pitch to help the team at a crucial moment in the Estádio do Dragão. “At the Dragão, he shouldn’t even have been in the game. He said he wanted to be with the team, that he was an important player, he wanted to help, he came on despite his condition and did very well. In terms of his feeling for the game, he won me over in five seconds,” revealed the coach, valuing the commitment and spirit of sacrifice of the midfielder.

The coach sent a clear message about the players’ responsibility: “They know they are in a demanding club and feel the responsibility; they know the weight they have in the team and know that at certain moments they take those risks, here and in all clubs.” He also added that “the best doctor for them is themselves; they know their own bodies better than anyone” and that “they themselves know how they can help the team.”

This revelation from Rui Borges exposes the harsh truth behind the daily choices and challenges at Sporting, showing that success does not always depend solely on market reinforcements or available talent, but also on the physical and mental resilience of the players, who often sacrifice themselves to keep the team competitive.

With this frank and realistic viewpoint, the Lions’ coach makes it clear that, even with a balanced squad, Sporting will have to continue fighting against the natural adversities of football, where the “moles” — unexpected injuries — continue to emerge from their hiding places and complicate the path to glory.
