Rui Costa, the president of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, delivered a fervent speech during the ceremony for the presentation of the Platinum Rings and Gold and Silver Dedication Emblems, highlighting the importance of the connection between members and the club. The event, which marked the 122nd anniversary of Benfica, was filled with emotion and symbolism, celebrating the stories of thousands of Benfica supporters who dedicated their lives to the Glorious.
“Today is a special day. We celebrate 122 years of life of our Sport Lisboa e Benfica. 122 years of history, passion, achievements, and a unique identity. The Glorious deserves congratulations,” exclaimed Rui Costa, who did not hold back in praising the members who, over 25, 50, and 75 years, contributed to the greatness of the club. In total, 2,082 members were honored, a testament to the deep bond that unites supporters with Benfica.
The president took the opportunity to highlight the impressive growth of the club’s membership. “Since the last anniversary, an additional 36,451 Benfica supporters have become members, and we are about to reach card number 440,000. These numbers reflect a tremendous demand and responsibility. Our ambition is clear: to reach and consolidate the goal of 500,000 members,” he stated, emphasizing the desire to make Benfica the largest club in the world.
Rui Costa did not shy away from addressing the recent elimination from the Champions League, which affected the mood of the fans, but he highlighted the unconditional loyalty of Benfica supporters. “During the game in Madrid, you could hear Benfica in that stadium. This passion also explains the huge demand for the Red Pass,” he emphasized, revealing plans to increase the capacity of the Estádio da Luz and provide more opportunities for members to experience the club up close. The recently approved Benfica District project will be a key piece for the club’s future.
Additionally, the president underscored the vital role of the Casas do Benfica, which spread the passion for the club around the world. “Benfica has no borders: it is global, it belongs to the world,” said Rui Costa, thanking the work of the Casas that keep the flame of benfiquismo alive.
Regarding sporting performance, Rui Costa did not hide his ambition to fight for the title. “We will fight, with all our strength, for this title until the end! We will fight for the 39 until our last breath,” he assured, encouraging members to remain united around the team, even in difficult times.
Finally, Rui Costa reminded that Benfica goes beyond sports, highlighting the club’s social commitment. “We also have a lot of social work to do because Benfica is a club that cares about its community,” he concluded, reinforcing the importance of the club’s role in society.
Rui Costa’s speech, full of emotion and determination, made it clear that Benfica is not just a club, but a true family, united by passion and unconditional love for the Glorious. The mission to reach new heights of greatness continues, and with the strength of its members, Benfica’s future promises to be bright.
