The goalkeeper Rui Silva, who started in the recent match of the National Team against Mexico, has no doubts: the focus should be on the process and not just the result. In a goalless draw, Silva explained that preparatory matches serve for much more than just accumulating points. Team confidence and cohesion are essential, especially with an eye on the 2026 World Cup.

“We want to go into every game to win, even if it’s a friendly match. Acquiring ideas and giving opportunities to players is fundamental. The result is not the most important thing. What really matters is the team we are building,” the goalkeeper stated in remarks to Canal 11, highlighting the importance of collective work.

When asked if he has already “earned credits” for a possible call-up to the World Cup, Rui Silva was cautious. “I wouldn’t say I’ve earned credits. I have to keep working and doing my job at the club. If things don’t go well at Sporting, it will be difficult for me to have the opportunity to be called up. My main goal is to be at the World Cup, something I have never experienced. I work every day for that and try to make the most of the opportunities given to me,” he said, revealing the determination that drives him.

The expectation of playing against the USA was also addressed. “The coach is the one who makes those decisions. Whenever I have the opportunity, I want to take advantage of it. We have an excellent pool of goalkeepers. Diogo, José, and Ricardo provide a great response, and I feel very grateful to be here working and learning with them,” he commented, referring to the healthy competition that exists in the goalkeeping position for the national team.

Rui Silva, who represents Sporting, is building a solid and ambitious career. His focus is clear: to shine at the club to secure a spot in Roberto Martínez’s squad for the much-anticipated World Cup competition. The journey to the 2026 World Cup is just beginning, but with the mindset and work ethic that Silva demonstrates, his aspirations seem to be within reach.
