Sporting faces another significant challenge this season, this time with the confirmation of Eduardo Quaresma’s injury. The young defender, who wears shirt number 72, will be sidelined for approximately three weeks due to a violent clash with Samu during the thrilling League Cup semi-final against Vitória de Guimarães. The situation becomes even more critical as Sporting prepares to face tough opponents in the league and the Champions League.

Eduardo Quaresma suffered a facial injury in the 66th minute of the match, in a play that left fans worried. The pain was immediate, and to ensure an accurate diagnosis, the player was quickly transported to Leiria Hospital, where he underwent surgery on the left zygomatic bone. This operation was necessary to address the damage resulting from the collision, and as a consequence, the defender will not be available for the upcoming matches, including games against Casa Pia and Arouca in the league, as well as crucial clashes against Paris Saint-Germain and Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League. When he finally returns to the pitch, Eduardo will have to wear a protective mask to safeguard his recovery.

In recent months, coach Rui Borges has faced a real puzzle in assembling his starting lineup, dealing with an alarming number of injuries, both muscular and traumatic. In addition to Quaresma, player Fotis Ioannidis also left the semi-final with complaints about his right knee, further complicating the team’s defensive situation. For the clash against Casa Pia, Rui Borges is expected to rely on Gonçalo Inácio, who has served a one-match suspension, and Zeno Debast, who is now recovered and ready to take action.

The situation in midfield is no less concerning, as Maxi Araújo and Morten Hjulmand will be unavailable due to the accumulation of yellow cards. This series of setbacks has led the coach to express his frustration at a press conference, where he emphasized the difficulty of coping with so many absences: “It’s something that seems like a study. Today I feel it more, and the team feels it too. It’s impossible, no matter how optimistic one is… it hurts to see so many people sidelined. It’s no excuse, it will never be,” stated Rui Borges.

Goalkeeper Rui Silva also commented on the situation: “There were many setbacks throughout the game, many things happening. We have to know how to deal with that; we are professionals.” With so many uncertainties hanging over the team, anticipation is rising to see how Sporting will respond against opponents that demand the best from their squad. The pressure is high, and the lions will need to find the necessary solutions to continue fighting for their goals this season.
