Sporting revealed on Monday its bold plan for pre-season, featuring heavyweight opponents and matches that promise to ignite preparations for the new season. The Lions are betting heavily on a demanding schedule, facing Scottish, French, and a historic English champion in a clear signal of their ambition to attack the 2026/27 season with maximum intensity.
The team led by Rúben Amorim will begin work on July 1 at the Alcochete Academy, the nerve center of the Lions’ training. On July 11, the squad will move to the Algarve, where they will remain for a training camp until July 20. During this period, Sporting will test their mettle against the newly crowned Scottish champion, Celtic, in a clash scheduled for July 14 at the Estádio Algarve. Six days later, on the 20th, Strasbourg, a team from Ligue 1, will be the opponent, also at that venue.

The return to Lisbon is scheduled for July 25, the date of the highly anticipated edition of the Troféu Cinco Violinos, which this year will feature AS Monaco, one of the most competitive teams in Ligue 1. The preparation cycle will conclude on July 31, with another match at Estádio Algarve, this time against Nottingham Forest, the English club managed by Portuguese coach Vítor Pereira, who will face the lions in what is expected to be an intense game.
This pre-season is crucial for Sporting, which aims to maintain a high competitive rhythm from day one. The Alvalade club is focusing on a high-level preparation, facing renowned international opponents, which will allow for a thorough assessment of the squad’s state and testing of new tactical options. The training camp in the Algarve, repeating the formula of previous years, has proven fruitful and is seen as essential for strengthening the group’s cohesion, away from the pressures of the capital.
In a statement, Sporting highlighted the demanding schedule, emphasizing that “the preparation of the team for the 2026/27 season will be marked by highly challenging matches against opponents with recognized quality in European football.” Coach Rúben Amorim, quoted by the club’s press office, made the objective clear: “We want to start the league in the best possible shape. These matches will allow us to grow, identify processes, and give minutes to all players.” The coach also added that “the training camp in the Algarve is fundamental for consolidating ideas and strengthening team spirit,” expressing confidence in the success of the preparation.
On the players’ side, the ambition is evident. One of the captains, Sebastián Coates, stated that “facing teams like Celtic, Strasbourg, Monaco, and Nottingham Forest is always motivating. The group is eager to start working and show that we are ready for another great season.” The Uruguayan defender also emphasized that “fans can expect a Sporting eager to win from the very first minute.”
With this schedule, Sporting positions itself as one of the Portuguese clubs with the highest demands in pre-season, strongly focusing on physical, tactical, and psychological preparation. Matches against international opponents are seen as essential for the team to test its limits and gain competitive rhythm before the official start.
Now, all eyes are on the response of the lions on the field. The way the squad assimilates Amorim’s ideas and responds to European-caliber opponents will be crucial for the club’s aspirations in 2026/27. The demanding Sporting fans are eagerly anticipating this preparation phase, hoping that the first signs will be of strength, ambition, and quality. One thing is certain: Sporting does not want to leave anything to chance and is preparing to attack the new season with sharpened claws, going all in on a luxurious pre-season.
