Luis Suárez and Fenerbahçe are at the center of a controversy that could shake up the transfer market, but Sporting maintains a position of strength and total control over the situation. Lawyer Gonçalo Almeida, a specialist in Sports Law and the only Portuguese appointed as a judge by FIFA, clarified in exclusive statements that Sporting is at an advantage and faces no immediate risks following the announcement of the agreement between the Uruguayan forward and the Turkish club.
The crux of the matter lies in the status of Hakan Safi, still a candidate for the presidency of Fenerbahçe, who announced that he has reached an understanding with Luis Suárez. Gonçalo Almeida is categorical: “He is nothing more than a candidate.” This means that until Safi officially assumes his role as president, Sporting cannot proceed with any appeal to FIFA. “Sporting can appeal to FIFA as soon as he takes office,” explains the lawyer, referencing Article 18 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, which requires interested clubs to first contact the club holding the player’s rights to negotiate formally.
The lawyer also emphasizes the importance of the contract linking Luis Suárez to Sporting, which includes a clear and binding release clause. “If Luis Suárez wants to leave, he has to pay the clause. If it is not paid or if there are no negotiations, Sporting holds all the cards,” concludes Gonçalo Almeida, highlighting the strength of the position of the Alvalade club.
This statement aims to dispel rumors and potential external pressures, placing Sporting in a position of strength to control the future of its key forward. As long as Fenerbahçe does not officially announce its new president, the Lisbon club maintains absolute control and can demand strict conditions for any potential transfer, ensuring it will not be sidelined in any negotiation.
The situation is set to remain tense in the coming days, but Sporting makes it clear that it will not give up its rights nor allow any candidate for a leadership position at another club to engage in negotiations that do not respect international football regulations. Luis Suárez may be on his way out, but only if he complies with the rules and the commitments made. Until then, Sporting indeed holds all the cards.
