Sporting Clube de Portugal is taking an audacious step in its strategy to strengthen its attack by betting on Souleymane Faye, a 22-year-old Senegalese winger who has emerged as one of the rising stars of Granada. The transfer, following intense negotiations that dragged on over the past few days, was officially sealed last Thursday, securing Faye for Sporting until 2030 with an impressive release clause of 80 million euros. The deal, valued at around 5 million euros, may also include an additional 2 million in variables.

With the agreement in place, the necessary formalities are underway, and Faye is expected to join the squad quickly, with the hope that he will be available as soon as this Sunday. Sporting wants the player to undergo the usual medical examinations and finalize the officialization of his contract as soon as possible, preparing him for an intense cycle of matches that lies ahead in January.

Although he is a relatively unknown name to many fans, Faye is about to make a monumental leap in his career, which has so far been marked by stints in lower divisions. Since arriving in Spain in the 2021/2022 season, Faye has not only sought but has also secured a place in the spotlight. Interestingly, during his time at Betis B, he formed a friendship with Guilherme Fernandes, a 24-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper who also has a special connection to Sporting, having been trained at the club. Although the two have taken different paths this season, their friendship remains intact.

Guilherme Fernandes did not hesitate to praise Sporting’s new signing, highlighting his qualities: “What stands out is his speed, combined with enormous potential in one-on-one situations. He is very strong in changing direction and, earlier this season, in the first leg match, he caused us significant difficulties. He will fit perfectly into Sporting and, surrounded by stars, he will be able to gain even greater prominence.” The goalkeeper also emphasized Faye’s determination, who comes from a humble background in Senegal and is fully aware of the opportunity this transfer represents: “He is more than ready for this challenge. At Betis, he was always very hardworking, and believe me, he worked hard to make this leap.”

At the moment, Faye is en route to Portugal and is expected to arrive in Lisbon between today and tomorrow, ready to be officially presented as the second winter signing for the lions. The athlete is just waiting for the green light to travel, a moment that should materialize by next Sunday. Sporting is thus continuing to build a squad that promises to aim for great heights, and Faye could be a key player in this new era.
