Cameron Young shines in Augusta with a round of 67, matching his best record at the Masters and gearing up for a final burst!
In the electrifying journey this Friday at the Masters in Augusta, Cameron Young left everyone astounded by matching his best round at the legendary Augusta National course, with an impressive scorecard of 67 strokes. After a hesitant start in the first round, where he made four bogeys in the first seven holes, the young American talent made an extraordinary recovery, recording a total of 8 under par in the last 29 holes. This performance places him tied for seventh place, just eight strokes behind the leader, none other than Rory McIlroy.
Young, winner of the prestigious The Players Championship, showed remarkable consistency on the second day, missing only one fairway and four greens, and maintaining impressive accuracy throughout the week, with only three fairways missed. When asked about the transformation of his game after the troubled first day, Young admitted he couldn’t pinpoint a clear cause, only recognising that “this course is brutal if you get out of position, especially around the greens.” His focus now is to maintain the same strategy and smart decisions that have kept him competitive in this edition.
While McIlroy staged an almost unbelievable sequence on the second nine, with four consecutive birdies from the 12th to the 15th hole, including a 7-metre putt on the par-5 15th, Young was not intimidated and continued to apply pressure. Despite missing birdie opportunities at the end of the round – including attempts from 3 metres on the 16th, 5 metres on the 17th, and 2.5 metres on the 18th – the young player did not lose his smile or confidence. “It’s always motivating to play with someone in great form, and watching Rory play like that only pushes us to elevate our level. He did practically everything right to be so far ahead,” commented Young, showing respect and humility in the face of the champion’s dominance.
With three top-10 finishes in five appearances at the Masters, Young is far from giving up on the dream of lifting the trophy in Augusta. The path will not be easy, especially with the weather conditions complicating matters and making the course even tougher, but his plan is to be aggressive yet smart, adapting to the wind variables and the complexity of the holes. “We rely heavily on the conditions, the wind, each hole. I’m trying to make the same choices I made today, and that’s been working,” stated the American.
If he can maintain this form and continue to overcome the challenges of the course, Young could join a select group of champions who have won The Players Championship and the Masters in the same season – a feat achieved by Scottie Scheffler in 2024 and, more famously, by Tiger Woods in 2001. The race is on, and Cameron Young is undoubtedly one of the names to watch closely this weekend in Augusta!
