Surprise in London: Chelsea has surpassed Inter Milan in the race to sign Marco Palestra, the Italian right-back who was an absolute priority for the European runners-up. Just when it seemed that the young player from Atalanta was headed for San Siro, the Blues stepped in with an irresistible offer, leaving the Milanese club out of the running and once again demonstrating the financial power of the Premier League over Italy’s Serie A.
The deal, as revealed this Tuesday by ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’, is practically closed and involves impressive numbers. Atalanta is expected to receive £55 million, approximately €63.7 million, for the transfer of the 21-year-old winger. In addition to this fixed amount, the Italians are also securing a considerable percentage of any future sale of the player, strengthening their negotiating power. Marco Palestra, in turn, will earn an annual salary of nearly €7 million in London – double what Inter Milan was willing to offer the Italian under-21 international.
This twist in the transfer market could have significant consequences for both English and Italian football. Chelsea, by securing one of the most promising full-backs in Europe, strengthens its squad in a position where it has felt evident shortcomings since last season, in a clear attempt to return to the upper echelons of the Premier League and make a comeback in the Champions League. On the other hand, Inter Milan is forced to quickly reshape its market plans, as it was counting on Palestra to compensate for the imminent departure of Denzel Dumfries, who is on his way to José Mourinho’s Real Madrid.
In recent statements, a source close to the deal revealed to the Italian press that “Chelsea showed much greater ambition and financial capacity. Marco felt valued and was determined to accept the challenge of playing in the Premier League.” The same source added: “Inter did everything it could, but it could not compete with the figures presented by the English.”
Marco Palestra, who was on loan to Cagliari last season, stood out as one of the most consistent young players in Serie A, having made 36 appearances, scoring 1 goal and providing 4 assists. His offensive profile, combined with an increasingly refined defensive solidity, caught the attention of several European giants, but it was Chelsea that ultimately won this genuine “war” behind the scenes.
Inter Milan, faced with Atalanta’s stubbornness and refusal to match the Londoners’ offer, is already preparing to shift its focus to other targets, including names like Giovanni Di Lorenzo (Napoli) and Juan Foyth (Villarreal). Internally, pressure is mounting on the Milanese management, which risks losing another strategic reinforcement at a crucial stage in preparation for the 2024/25 season.
For Palestra, the move to Stamford Bridge represents a qualitative leap in his career and a new test of his adaptability, now in one of the most demanding and high-profile leagues in the world. Chelsea, with their eyes set on returning to the top, is heavily investing in youth and Italian talent to regain lost prominence. An official announcement is expected in the coming days, and the entire Premier League will be watching closely to see how the new addition to the Blues adapts. Expectations are high: will Marco Palestra justify the astronomical investment and become one of the best full-backs in European football?
