Galatasaray announced on Sunday that Rafael Leão has suffered a muscle injury to his right leg. The forward will be sidelined from Portugal duty and competitive football for at least the next month.
The confirmation came after tests revealed a serious strain and bleeding in the upper right posterior muscle group. The Portugal international’s treatment began immediately.
Injury came in win over Amedspor
The problem arose during Galatasaray’s win over Amedspor, in a match on matchday 11 of the Turkish league, in which Leão scored as early as the seventh minute. His involvement was brief, as he went off in the 50th minute because of the injury.
The situation is a heavy blow for the team, who will be without one of their key players.
Before the definitive diagnosis, Leão had tried to play down the problem. He said he did not see anything serious in the injury and suggested it could be related to accumulated fatigue.
“That’s football, and there is no reason for disappointment,” said the forward, who praised the quality of the club’s medical staff and expressed hope of playing normally again after the international break.
Out of Portugal’s Nations League matches
Rafael Leão will miss both of Portugal’s Nations League matches, against Denmark and Wales, scheduled for the 14th and 17th of this month. The player’s absence could affect the national team, who are looking to secure their position in international competitions.
Galatasaray must now find alternative solutions to cover for Leão, a crucial figure in the attack of the Istanbul side. The hope is that the treatment progresses effectively and that the player returns in top form, to contribute once again to both club and country.
