Hwang In-Beom leads South Korea’s comeback against the Czech Republic in the World Cup.

A goal of pure genius and an unexpected turnaround by South Korea left the Czech Republic in absolute shock at the 2026 World Cup, during a night in Guadalajara marked by the coldness of the stands and the watchful gaze of Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA. Against all odds, and in a match where the Asians seemed doomed to defeat, Hwang In-beom, the Feyenoord midfielder, propelled his team to a 2-1 victory, defying the very logic of the game and sending shockwaves through Group A.

In the first match of this group stage, held on Mexican soil, South Korea, led by Hong Myung-bo, entered with an unexpected intensity and dominance, suffocating an apathetic Czech Republic for long stretches. Right from the opening whistle, the South Koreans imposed a dizzying pace, with quick ball exchanges and high pressure, forcing the Czechs to retreat and limit themselves to defending. Kang-in Lee, the PSG star, took on the role of offensive maestro, creating two clear opportunities: first, he set up Son in a play that he squandered, and then he forced Kovar, the Czech goalkeeper, into a tight save in the 14th minute, which was the best chance of the first half.

The Czech response only appeared from the first quarter of an hour, particularly in set-piece situations, but effectiveness continued to be lacking. Despite Asian dominance, the score stubbornly remained unchanged, largely due to the saves by Kovar and Son’s inefficacy, who squandered two clear opportunities near the end of the first half. In stoppage time, Lee Tae-seok set up Son for a goal on a plate, but the LAFC forward failed again, keeping the score at zero at halftime.

The second half brought even more excitement and, above all, a twist. Czech goalkeeper Kovar was once again outstanding, making a phenomenal double save from shots by Hwang In-beom and Jae-sung Lee, before denying Son a goal in a one-on-one situation. Just when it seemed that a South Korean goal was imminent, it was the Czech Republic that took the lead against the run of play: in the 59th minute, from a long throw-in by Coufal, Krejci, completely unmarked, headed the ball powerfully into the back of the net, freezing the Asian fans present.

The cold shower did not deter South Korea, which responded with class. Just eight minutes after conceding, Hwang In-beom demonstrated why he is considered one of the most talented midfielders of the current generation. After receiving a pass from Kang-in Lee, the Feyenoord player left two opponents behind and shot confidently to equalize, in a move that is already making waves on social media. “It was a moment of pure inspiration; I knew I couldn’t miss,” Hwang In-beom said at the end of the match, visibly emotional about the impact of his goal on the outcome of the game.

The Czech reaction was swift, with Soucek putting the ball into the South Korean net, but the VAR disallowed the goal for offside, increasing the tension on the field. And in the next play, the turnaround was completed. Hwang In-beom, again decisive, combined with Paik and assisted Hyeon-gyu Oh, who came from behind and, with a precise shot, made it 2-1, leaving Kovar with no chance. “We always believed that winning was possible,” highlighted Oh, the author of the winning goal, in statements to the press moments after the final whistle.

In the final minutes, the Czech Republic desperately sought the equalizer, but consistently ran into an inspired goalkeeper. Kim Seung-gyu, with two top-level interventions against shots from Hlozek and Sadilek, secured the three points and ensured a triumphant entry for South Korea in this World Cup.

With this result, the Asian team takes second place in Group A, only behind Mexico due to goal difference, and sends a serious warning to the other opponents. For the Czech Republic, this defeat represents an unexpected setback and forces the team to win in the upcoming matches to secure progression to the next stage. South Korea, energized by this performance and the spirit of resilience shown, is now preparing for the clash against Mexico, in a match that could be decisive for the fate of the group. The 2026 World Cup promises excitement and surprises with each round, and South Korea demonstrated this morning that it is ready to challenge any favoritism.
