In a historic moment for German tennis, Alexander Zverev has finally claimed his first Grand Slam title, breaking a 30-year drought for German men. On the iconic court of Roland Garros, Zverev triumphed in a titanic battle against Italian Flavio Cobolli, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 in a match filled with tension and raw emotion.

Boris Becker, the legendary German champion and three-time Wimbledon winner, did not hold back in his praise for his compatriot, highlighting the resilience and mental strength Zverev had to cultivate to achieve this long-awaited feat. “The images speak for themselves. A lifelong dream has come true,” Becker stated in exclusive comments to Eurosport and TNT Sports, emphasizing the arduous journey of the young tennis player.

“He can hardly believe what just happened. He – and his entire family – have worked for years for this moment. If there is a player at the top of the rankings who truly deserves this, after years of hard work, disappointments, and despair, it is him. More than deserved. And to achieve all this while living with diabetes? It is simply unbelievable. I am very proud of him,” Becker added, underscoring Zverev’s extraordinary personal struggle.

The former German tennis prodigy also recalled the dark moments of Zverev’s career, particularly the tragic accident that nearly brought an end to his career at the 2022 French Open, when he suffered a severe ankle injury, with seven torn ligaments and two fractured bones. “He was on the verge of never being able to compete again. It took him a long time to recover his full physical form. Today, he showed the world what he is capable of and became a Grand Slam champion. My admiration is immense. Now he is part of a very special club — and that feels really good,” concluded Becker, visibly emotional.

Zverev himself did not hide the significance of the moment and his deep connection to Roland Garros, the stage of his greatest triumphs and his greatest defeats. “This court is special to me in so many ways. I’ve had the best moments of my life here, but also the worst. I was lying in that corner four years ago, with seven torn ligaments and two fractured bones. I lost a Grand Slam final here two years ago. Now, finally, it’s a happy ending,” confessed the 29-year-old tennis player.

Zverev acknowledged that the last year has been particularly difficult, having felt “emotionally empty” after his defeat to Jannik Sinner at the 2025 Australian Open. However, his mental resilience and unwavering determination allowed him not only to regain confidence but also to achieve the ultimate dream in tennis.

“This year is one of the happiest moments of my life. It’s a completely different feeling,” concluded the champion, who now joins the ranks of the greats in world tennis, with the promise of even more glory on the horizon. Zverev’s victory is not just a personal triumph, but a milestone that revitalizes German tennis and sends a clear warning to his rivals: a new king of the Grand Slams is on the throne.
