Moise Kouame is creating a wave of excitement in France and promises to revolutionize French tennis at just 17 years and two months old. The young prodigy, who has already made history by being the first player born in 2009 to compete in an ATP tournament—at the 250 in Montpellier—is winning over Paris and French tennis fans at Roland Garros. Following the disappointments caused by the absence of Arthur Fils and the early elimination of the charismatic Gael Monfils, Kouame emerges as the new hope for the Gallic nation.

In the Paris tournament, Kouame eliminated prominent names from the circuit, first defeating Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic and then Paraguayan Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in an epic duel that lasted five hours and ended with a score of 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(8). The victory reflects not only talent but also a steely mindset, as he managed to turn the match around after trailing 2-5 in the fifth set and triumphed in the tie-break. Inspired by the legendary comeback of Carlos Alcaraz against Sinner in last year’s final, Kouame admitted: “I never stopped believing. When I was down 5-3, I kept my confidence until the end.”

Kouame is only the second youngest tennis player of this century to reach the third round of a Grand Slam, behind only Rafael Nadal. In a press conference, the Frenchman did not hide his ambitions: “Winning the Roland Garros is a dream, but the real goal is to win all the Grand Slams and, who knows, become world number one. It’s still early to think about the final victory, but I am very happy to be in the third round and I will give everything to win again.”

Analyzing his physical endurance after such an exhausting battle, the young player emphasized the work with his physical trainer: “If I managed to win this match, it’s because I have been working very well physically. This is positive, but I need to continue, as to win a Grand Slam you need to win seven consecutive matches. This is just the first step; I hope many more come.”

With this performance, Kouame is on the verge of breaking into the top 200 in the world, a remarkable achievement for such a young athlete. Regarding the new generation of talents challenging the dominance of Sinner and Alcaraz, he displayed a rare maturity: “I see this situation positively. I’m always considered the underdog, and people come to watch the spectacle, not to see me win the tournament. I want to go as far as possible, but thinking about the age of my opponents is a mistake. When I’m at the tournament, I focus on winning the match, regardless of the opponent’s age, and that has been working very well for me.”

Moise Kouame is undoubtedly the name to watch in French and global tennis. His tireless fight, talent, and ambition promise to make him one of the major players in the coming years. Fans are already eager to see this young phenomenon challenge the best on the podium of global tennis.
