In the heart of the ATP Masters 1000 in Rome, Rafael Jodar staged an intense and dramatic duel against Italian Matteo Arnaldi, firmly securing his place in the round of 16. In a match that lasted just over two hours, the Spanish player prevailed with a final score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, in a battle that had it all: early dominance, a fierce comeback, and an exciting conclusion.

The first set was a stroll for Jodar, who started off overwhelmingly, racing to a 5-0 lead and 40-0 in just a few minutes. Arnaldi, despite managing to break his opponent’s serve, could not capitalize on the opportunities to minimize the damage, conceding the set 6-1. But the match was far from over. The Italian, hailing from Liguria, responded strongly and took the lead in the second set. Arnaldi broke right from the start, gaining a 2-0 advantage and finally holding his serve, something that had eluded him until then. Despite facing some difficulties, including two dangerous break points given up at 3-2, Arnaldi held onto his lead and took the set to a decisive third set, with an impressive serve and volley on the set point that thrilled the crowd at the Foro Italico.

In the third set, the match reached an even more intense level. Arnaldi started with a break and took a 2-0 lead, showcasing all his talent and ambition. But from 3-2, with a crucial service game lost, the Italian saw his energy wane against Jodar’s consistency and determination. The light rain that began to fall over Rome did not stop the spectacle, but seemed to accompany the decline of the local player, who watched as the Spaniard strung together five consecutive games to close the final set at 6-3.

In the next round, Jodar will face the young talent Learner Tien, who caused a major upset by eliminating Alexander Bublik with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. The draw for the bottom half of the round of 16 is set and promises explosive matchups: Musetti against Ruud; Khachanov versus Prizmic; Jodar facing Tien; and Darderi against Zverev.

In the women’s sector, the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto was decisively eliminated in the round of 16, losing 6-1, 6-0 to the current world number one, Iga Swiatek, in an elimination that marks the end of her best campaign to date at the Internazionali d’Italia. The women’s draw for the round of 16 is completely aligned, featuring heavyweight clashes between Cirstea and Noskova, Kalinskaya and Ostapenko, Gauff against Jovic, among other matchups that promise to raise the bar of the tournament even higher.

This ATP Masters 1000 in Rome continues to showcase the best of world tennis, with young prospects challenging the giants and matches that keep fans glued to their seats. Rafael Jodar is now focused on maintaining his overwhelming form and fighting for a place in the final stages of this prestigious tournament.
