Rafael Nel celebrates his first start with a decisive goal: “It was the best birthday present I could receive”

In a vibrant and emotional display, Rafael Nel, a young prospect from Sporting, shone in the 4-2 victory over Santa Clara, sealing the match with a decisive goal. The forward’s first start coincided with his birthday, making the moment even more special and unforgettable.

“Starting as a starter on my birthday, there could be no better gift,” Rafael questioned, visibly pleased with the team’s performance. “The team managed to give me this gift; it was a well-fought match, we came out on top, and took home the three points, which is the most important thing.”

The challenge proved difficult despite the victory. Santa Clara scored two goals that complicated the match, but Sporting responded with maturity. “We conceded two goals from Santa Clara, which made things a bit difficult, but we killed the game right after. It was a good game from the whole team,” stated the young forward.

Interestingly, Nel’s goal was scored in a similar area to the one he previously used against Bodo/Glimt. Regarding this, the player explained: “Every game is a different experience. Working during the week with my teammates, I get to know better what I can do; it’s different from watching on television or in the stadium. With that, I can take advantage of some characteristics and end up scoring and being happy.”

In light of the absences of Suárez and Ioannidis, who were unable to take the field, coach Rui Borges conveyed a clear message to Rafael Nel: “He just asked me to be myself, to play simply, as I am as a player. That was perhaps the secret.” The forward did not forget to highlight the support from his teammates, even off the pitch: “I want to emphasize that Luis and Ioannidis help me daily, talking to me and giving positive feedback. The victory is for them and for those who cannot be here today.”

In the end, the dedication of the goal could be none other: “To all the youth academy, to everyone watching the game from the academy, and to my family, who are always present, and to myself as well [laughs].”

With this performance, Rafael Nel not only marks his name in the first team of Sporting, but also sends a clear signal that he is ready to take on new challenges and responsibilities. The future looks promising, and his debut as a starter on his birthday will forever be etched in the memory of the young forward.
