“Sabalenka reacts to the controversy over VIP treatment for Alcaraz at the tournament.”

The controversy is brewing at the Miami Masters 1,000, where the world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, expressed her disbelief and dissatisfaction regarding the VIP treatment given to young prodigy Carlos Alcaraz. The tournament, already weakened by adverse weather conditions, was forced to alter its schedule to prioritize the match between Alcaraz and João Fonseca, leaving Sabalenka sidelined.

The whims of nature brought to light an unusual situation that shook the tournament’s structure, with rain forcing the cancellation of an entire day and disrupting the start of the second round. At the center of the controversy were the debuts of Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz, both scheduled for the main court. However, the tournament’s management made the decision to divert attention to the men’s match, prompting the Belarusian to question the logic behind this choice.

In a press conference, Aryna Sabalenka did not hold back. “I was very surprised that they were considering canceling my match or giving me options to play on other courts. I thought, what’s the problem with Alcaraz and Fonseca starting later?” she vented, making her discomfort with the situation clear. Her astonishment was even more evident when she stated, “I think I’ve never faced anything like this. I think it’s a new experience. I don’t remember anything like it.”

The leader of the women’s circuit also questioned the logic of the organization, noting that the previous night’s session started at nine, which made the decision even stranger. However, despite her disbelief, Sabalenka chose to accept the situation, acknowledging that the choice not to postpone her match might be the best for the tournament. “I decided to play today to have a free day that allows me to rest. I suppose that’s what the tournament tickets are for; it was the best option. At least they allowed me to choose to play on another court,” she concluded.

The situation raises questions about how elite tournaments manage priorities and how decisions can impact not only the players but also the fans’ experience. The preferential treatment given to Alcaraz, one of the greatest young talents in tennis, contrasts with the way a top player like Sabalenka was treated, sparking a necessary debate about equality and respect in sports. The Belarusian’s indignation echoes a broader concern about power dynamics within the circuit, where rising stars seem to have their privileges while veterans face unexpected obstacles.
