Roberto Martínez stirred the waters by completely dismissing any strategy to avoid European opponents, ensuring that Portugal is focused solely on winning, regardless of who crosses the path of the national team. The national coach was clear in stating that it makes no sense to think about calendar calculations or potential opponents, in a speech that dismisses all theories of “path management” towards the knockout stage of the World Cup.

During the press conference ahead of the round of 16 match, Martínez addressed head-on the ideas surrounding an alleged preference for non-European teams. “Unfortunately, no, [that theory] does not make sense, we want to win every game. When we arrived, it was about trying to grow a lot, using the games to prepare everyone. The idea was to win every game and win the group, but the World Cup is not like that. It’s about trying to improve, experimenting with aspects, aligning concepts and the path; I’ve talked about this, you can’t choose it, you have to give your best on the path that comes and now we are focused on the round of 16,” clarified the Spaniard, reinforcing that the team's ambition is always victory, without subterfuge.

The clash against Spain, considered by many to be a “premature final,” promises to be one of the most intense matches of this stage of the competition, featuring two teams that excel in controlling the midfield and displaying personality on the pitch. The task does not appear easy for Portugal, which will face a Spanish team that remains unbeaten and has not conceded any goals in the group stage. Martínez acknowledged the level of the opponent but did not hide his confidence in the Portuguese approach: “We have great respect for the opponent; Spain is a very, very good team with a very clear idea. We are better teams with the ball; we need to defend with the ball to enhance the quality of our players, but it is important to have complete performances. We need to be good without the ball, defend quickly, and transition; we saw that in the Nations League final. The 2-2 was a short result, and tomorrow will be the same. We need personality to maintain the level and a high intensity and to be able to utilize the entire group. We need freshness, with the players on the bench contributing, to maintain the level of play that both teams have.”

The importance of this clash goes far beyond the immediate result. A victory against Spain could catapult Portugal into a new competitive dimension, reinforcing the belief that the dream of winning the title is achievable. On the other hand, an early elimination could generate doubts and instability around a project that, according to Martínez, has been built on tactical flexibility and collective growth. The coach did not hesitate to praise his players' adaptability, emphasizing that “we have a lot of flexibility, the team can use attacking patterns with two strikers, one, three number 10s, players inside, inverted feet. That was work we did over three and a half years, it would be a weakness for us to limit our game to one offensive pattern or tactical aspect. Our strength is the flexibility we have and all the players are ready. 21 have already been on the pitch, and I believe Inácio and Guedes can help the team.”

Confronted with the possibility of fielding both Ronaldo and Gonçalo Ramos simultaneously, Martínez explained the strategy and recalled the importance of adapting to the circumstances of the game: “The first half against Croatia was very good, but when you are superior and the opponent scores, it’s the moment when we needed to change the dynamics and it was important to have two strikers to reach the goal, to put pressure on the center-backs. Then when we scored, it became a different game; Croatia is also a team that uses the ball well and we needed to adjust in midfield. We couldn’t play with a disadvantage. Regarding the moments of the game, the opponent, what we are looking for, the important thing is that the players contribute.”

Regarding the team's morale after four matches, the Spanish coach assured that Portugal is prepared to face any opponent and highlighted the growth exhibited throughout the tournament. “In the course of the World Cup, it is important to look ahead to the next opponent. What we did against the DR Congo, Uzbekistan, Colombia, and Croatia were steps that help us grow. Diogo Costa is in a fantastic moment; we need him. The important thing is that the team knows how to endure, maintain the level until the end, which helps a lot in playing the Round of 16. We are here to be at the best level Portugal can be in the Round of 16 and not to face Spain. That has been our journey. Every game is different, but we are more prepared to be at our best level than when we arrived in Houston,” assured Roberto Martínez.

The uncertainty regarding possible changes in the starting eleven remains, but the coach made it clear that the choice always lies in the pursuit of the best solution for each challenge, refusing to individualize or create controversies around potential departures or arrivals: “First, I want to say that the players you are talking about are very important to us. It is not about discussing the departure of a player; that is not how we work. The group is above all.”

The next chapter of the Portuguese campaign will be written under the maximum pressure of a clash with one of Europe's greatest rivals, in a duel that could define the true potential of this generation. Whatever the outcome, Martínez's message is clear: Portugal is ready for anything, with renewed ambition and unafraid of anyone. The anticipation is high, and fans are eager for the national team's response on the field, on a night that promises to be etched in the memory of national football.
