Michael Carrick has just paved the way for Tottenham to make a strong move for the signing of [Rafael Leão](https://apitofinal.pt/internacional/italia/milan-planeia-vender-pecas-chave-como-rafael-leao-e-tomori-neste-verao/), which could be one of the major coups of the English transfer market. With [Manchester United](https://apitofinal.pt/internacional/arsenal-surpreende-ao-apontar-wan-bissaka-como-alvo-para-lateral-direito/) distancing themselves from the race, the Londoners have now become the main favorites to secure the Portuguese winger, who is valued at around £60 million.

Tottenham, who are looking to strengthen their flanks this summer and may even sign two wingers, have identified Rafael Leão as a priority target, after previously showing interest in Savinho from Manchester City and Cody Gakpo from Liverpool. AC Milan and Leão have reached an agreement to end their relationship, which has lasted since 2019, with the Italian club setting a price between €60 and €70 million (£51 to £60 million) for the departure of the Portuguese international.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that clubs from Saudi Arabia have already made offers to Leão, but the player, who is currently representing Portugal at the World Cup, prefers to continue his career in Europe. Romano wrote: “Rafa Leão is still expected to leave AC Milan this summer, with options being evaluated after the World Cup. Leão and the club agree that a departure is the best solution; clubs from the Saudi Pro League have started to approach. He is waiting for European clubs, but Saudi Arabia is also an option.”

The same information was confirmed by TEAMtalk, which reports that Leão's true desire is to sign with one of the top clubs in the Premier League. The player has already given his approval to his representatives to move forward with Tottenham, should the club reach an agreement with Milan. Coach Roberto De Zerbi could thus receive a high-profile reinforcement, as Leão is one of the most sought-after names in the market.

However, there was an obstacle threatening the Spurs' plans: the interest from Manchester United. According to The Sun, the player was also offered to the Red Devils, but Michael Carrick, the United coach, does not consider Leão a priority. “But Michael Carrick does not see him as a key target, despite the interest,” they added. Thus, United is expected to withdraw from the race, clearing the way for Tottenham.

With Leão out of the picture, Manchester United can now fully focus on Crysencio Summerville from West Ham, whose contract includes a relegation clause that allows for his signing for £40 million, provided the amount is paid in full and immediately. West Ham is also willing to accept staggered payments, as long as the total amount exceeds £40 million.

Tottenham finds itself in a privileged position to secure one of the most high-profile transfers of the summer, potentially acquiring one of the most talented wingers currently available, without direct competition from a historic rival. It remains to be seen whether the London club will be able to reach an agreement with AC Milan to fulfill Rafael Leão's desire.
