Rúben Amorim surprised in his media debut as head coach of AC Milan, making it clear that he is more ambitious than ever following a brief stint in English football and openly praising the signing of Gonçalo Ramos. The new Portuguese coach was officially presented on Wednesday at San Siro, in an atmosphere of great anticipation among the Italian and international press.
The coach, who signed a contract valid for two seasons, succeeds Massimiliano Allegri at the helm of the rossoneri, becoming the third Portuguese coach to take charge of the club in the last two years, following the brief tenures of Paulo Fonseca and Sérgio Conceição. In the press conference, Amorim addressed several crucial topics, demonstrating charisma and confidence in his responses, despite admitting that he does not yet master the Italian language.
At the beginning of his remarks, Amorim made a point of acknowledging the importance of communicating in Italian: “First of all, I want to apologize for not speaking Italian. I know that, especially here in Italy and with the fans, it is important for me to speak Italian, to respect your culture. I promise I will be quick. I tried on the first day, so I know the importance of the Milan coach speaking Italian.” He appeared visibly excited about the new challenge: “It is an honor to be here, I am very happy. I feel that the city lives the club. I felt that in my first three days in the city. I love the [training center] Milanello. I think the place has history. It’s calm, they say it’s old, I love that kind of old. Everything is there. I love the staff. I couldn’t be happier. I feel at home. We’ll see, but for now I am very happy to be here.”
The coach also explained what motivated him to accept the invitation from Milan: “I accepted not only because it’s Milan. I went to the first meeting with many concerns [laughs] due to the revolution we had at our club. But after the first meeting, I was already the coach of Milan. They didn’t know, because we still had to discuss the contract. But in my mind, after the first meeting, I was convinced.” Amorim emphasized that he has already identified strengths and weaknesses in the squad: “I look at the team and the team has some principles that I like. We defend quite well. If you look at the table, we need to score more goals. If you see the top team in the league, the champion, there is a big difference and we need to address that. But I had good meetings about the team and scouting, about what the idea was.”
With these statements, Amorim made it clear that he arrives at Milan with clear ideas and a desire to bring about significant change, especially in terms of offensive effectiveness. The Portuguese coach expressed confidence in the club's structure and resources, promising serious work focused on immediate success. The Milan squad now knows they have a determined leader attentive to every detail, while fans eagerly await the next developments under Rúben Amorim's leadership.
