Jack Draper is experiencing a distressing moment in his career, which appears to be at risk following a frustrating attempt to return to the circuit. The young British tennis player, who was once ranked number one in the United Kingdom, could not hold back his tears during his opening match at the Canadian Open, where he faced Frenchman Terence Atmane. After a year marked by a persistent injury affecting his arm, Draper seemed hopeful, but reality quickly set in, leading to a devastating emotional moment.

Draper, who had managed to win the second set, appeared to be regaining his form, but the situation deteriorated in the third set. With his serve speed declining and his body language revealing that something was wrong, the 2025 Indian Wells Masters player was forced to retire. With the score at 4-1 in favor of Atmane, emotions overflowed and Draper was caught in tears, revealing the pressure he feels.

His defeat by 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 became almost irrelevant compared to the greater concern: the uncertainty about his ability to compete at the highest level again. The arm injury, which seems to have no solution, has been a burden for Draper; he has undergone numerous medical consultations and tried various treatments, including changing the strings on his racket. However, his attempts to recover have been fruitless, and as he sat on the bench, his hope of returning crumbled.

Annabel Croft, former British number one, commented on the situation Draper found himself in: “This is quite emotional. He is doubled over and literally bursting with emotion. It’s very, very sad to see. I can only assume that his arm is hurting.” Croft emphasized that Draper’s emotional pain is related to the effort he has had to make to get back to competing.

Looking ahead, Draper received a wild card for next week’s Cincinnati Masters and is also expected to receive one for the US Open. However, doubts arise about his ability to compete in the coming years, as prolonged rest and new attempts to resolve the injury may be the only viable solution. The tennis community is closely watching the unfolding of this situation, hoping that Draper can overcome this challenge.
