Nuno Espírito Santo faces a critical dilemma in his time in charge of West Ham, one that could determine his future at the helm. Edson Álvarez, a player who was frozen out for expressing a desire to leave, may now be the solution the manager needs to restore competitiveness to the London club’s midfield. With the team’s current form in decline, Nuno is being forced to reconsider his stance towards the Mexican.
Since the start of the season, Álvarez has not been part of Nuno’s plans, making only one competitive appearance, in the Carabao Cup against Portsmouth in August. However, the lack of balance in midfield, evident in the recent home defeats to Southampton and West Brom, is putting pressure on the manager to reassess his choices. The absence of an experienced and physically robust player such as Álvarez is becoming a matter of urgency as West Ham try to avoid another frustrating season in the Championship.
Nuno set high standards and demanded commitment, refusing to let players who wanted to leave disrupt the dressing room. However, circumstances have changed drastically since the summer. Jarrod Bowen, the club captain, stressed the need for players who stayed despite wanting to leave to show their worth and commitment to the club. The pressure on Nuno is growing, as his position as manager could be at stake if he fails to turn the negative trend around.
Álvarez, who cost £35m, looks a viable option to help fill the gaps in midfield. The Mexico international has experience of playing at a high level and can offer the defence the protection it needs, helping to control matches that have so far been dominated by the opposition. His presence could allow more creative players to concentrate on influencing games further up the pitch.
Recently, there have been signs that Álvarez is trying to mend relations with the squad, including a social media post in which he refers to Bowen as ‘Capitano’ and ‘brother’. The player is already training with Nuno’s group again, showing a willingness to improve the situation. With the January transfer window approaching, West Ham are at a crossroads: continue to sideline an experienced player or bring him back in and make use of his qualities at a critical moment.
If Nuno fails to strike the right balance and make use of Álvarez, he could face serious consequences. Support from the fans is waning and pressure from the board is growing. There are rumours that Daniel Kretinsky, the club’s owner, is prepared to carry out a thorough review of the team’s situation if the poor results continue. The relationship between Nuno and Álvarez could be the key to the manager’s future at West Ham.
