Arsenal took over at the top of the Premier League with a landmark 1-0 win away to Liverpool, while Manchester United sank deeper into crisis after a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea. The weekend raised crucial questions about the teams’ performances and the fight for survival in the league.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta secured a historic victory at Anfield, something that had eluded him since he arrived at the club seven years ago. The team responded impressively to a humiliating League Cup exit against Fleetwood, with Kai Havertz scoring early. However, the defence was crucial, as Liverpool failed to take the chances they created before the break and were completely dominated in the second half, after Arteta had restored order in the dressing room. With this win, Arsenal opened up a three-point lead at the top of the table, at a time when Manchester City face the prospect of a heavy penalty for breaching Premier League rules.
Manchester United, on the other hand, are in an alarming position, staying out of the relegation zone only on goal difference. The last time the team were in this position after August was 40 years ago, and history seems to be repeating itself. Interim head coach Michael Carrick saw his side waste a promising first half with a disastrous second period. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for Chelsea after a defensive error by United, followed by a red card for Lisandro Martinez, which led to Cole Palmer converting a penalty. This is the club’s worst start to a season in 38 years, and the possibility of relegation, although remote, cannot be ignored, especially given the excellent start made by the promoted sides.
Meanwhile, Brighton are dreaming big, after an impressive 3-0 win over Arsenal in September and a historic victory over Manchester City. The team, led by Fabian Hurzeler, have shown they can compete at the highest level, remaining the best defence in the league with six clean sheets in nine games. “Defence wins battles and championships,” said Hurzeler, underlining his team’s confidence in defying the odds and achieving something unprecedented.
With the title race heating up and Manchester United’s future in doubt, the coming weeks promise to be decisive in the Premier League. Arsenal will be watching Brighton’s form, while United must urgently find a way to turn their fortunes around before it is too late.
