Arsenal beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield in the Premier League thanks to a goal from Kai Havertz, ending a 14-year wait for a win at the stadium. Mikel Arteta expressed his pride in the team.
The result lets the Gunners return to the top of the table. The win is all the more significant because the team had to withstand considerable pressure from Liverpool in the second half.
Arteta highlights response to Carabao Cup defeat
Arteta praised the spirit and resilience of his players, who secured a memorable result after the disappointment of the Carabao Cup, where they were knocked out by a team they should have beaten.
“Extremely proud. It’s been 14 years, that’s a long time. I’m sure we made everyone connected to the club extremely proud today,” the manager told Sky Sports. He stressed the importance of the win not only for the result, but for the way the team performed on the pitch, especially after the previous defeat.
The Spanish manager underlined the winning mentality of his players and said the ability to respond to setbacks is what sets a great team apart. “That’s the magical part of this game, it can take you to some very bad places, but four days later you have the chance to do something truly historic, and we did it,” Arteta added.
Liverpool dangerous in transition
Analysing the match, Arteta acknowledged the quality of Liverpool’s attack, which can create chances from opposition errors. “The way they attack, they can generate vertical attacks almost from a poor clearance or a bad throw-in,” he explained.
He said the team were well prepared to react to those situations, although he admitted there were chances that were not converted into goals.
Three points clear of City
With this win, Arsenal are three points ahead of Manchester City, who lost to Brighton on Saturday.
Arteta said he was pleased to be able to beat top teams such as Chelsea and Manchester United, and reaffirmed that this is the team’s aim and motivation. “It’s a challenge we want to meet. I love it when we achieve something we haven’t done for many years,” the manager concluded.
