Manchester United are preparing a move for Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as Michael Carrick looks to fix the team’s defensive weaknesses before the January transfer window.
According to TEAMtalk, the Red Devils are determined to secure the Spain international after receiving encouraging signs about his availability.
Difficult relationship with Flick opens door to exit
Barcelona are increasingly willing to let the 23-year-old leave, mainly because of his difficult relationship with head coach Hansi Flick. Despite his poor form and limited opportunities in the Catalan side, United’s recruitment team believe Balde has huge potential and could develop into an important player if he rediscovers his best level.
“That makes the prospect of a loan particularly attractive, with United able to assess the defender in English football without an immediate long-term commitment,” said Bailey.
Manchester United have already been contacted about a possible loan deal for January, and the club’s football department is considering the opportunity. Balde’s availability represents a potential solution to strengthen the left-back position, an area where the Red Devils need more competition and depth.
Balde has shown pace, attacking instinct and the ability to contribute going forward, qualities that make him an excellent addition to Carrick’s squad.
The left-back has struggled to establish himself in Barcelona’s starting XI this season and has played only 101 minutes in La Liga and 16 minutes in the Champions League. He was initially determined to fight for his place at the Catalan club, but his limited involvement has changed his attitude.
The deterioration in his relationship with Flick has led the defender to seriously consider leaving when the January window opens.
Liverpool and other clubs also approached
To complete a deal, suitable terms will have to be agreed with the Spanish champions. Barcelona appear willing to allow a loan exit, while Balde is now open to the idea of moving to England.
Liverpool have also been approached about signing the defender, as have Sunderland, Everton and Fulham, who have also shown interest.
Manchester United, however, are stepping up their efforts to secure Balde’s services, seeing his availability as a chance to solve a problem position. A move in January could benefit all parties, allowing Balde to regain regular playing time and giving United a quality defensive option.
The Red Devils now hope to turn their interest into a concrete offer.
