The tennis player himself explained the impact of the surgery on his preparation: “Yes, I had my tonsils removed. It wasn’t so much the operation, but the time I spent inactive and the virtually non-existent training. He really played a great match, coming off a final, and it was difficult for me because he was full of confidence.” Darderi did not hide his disappointment but was realistic about the reasons that led to this early exit, pointing to a lack of physical preparation and competitive rhythm as decisive factors.
Despite the disappointment, Darderi remains focused on the upcoming challenges of the season. “The next two tournaments on clay will give me some breathing space before I start again on the American hard court. Today is the 29th, I will play on the 18th in Båstad. I will have 20 days to get back in shape. Here I didn’t have much time, but it is what it is; I need to keep going and move forward. After Båstad, I will go to Estoril. I am registered for Los Cabos, but it depends on how the first two go. Last year I got injured in America, and then there are two important Masters 1000 events for the ranking, so we will see,” said the Italian, outlining his competitive calendar with pragmatism.
Early elimination forces Darderi to rethink his approach to grass and focus efforts on fully recovering his physical condition, so as not to jeopardize his fight for a spot in the world top 10.
