“Sabalenka responds with sarcasm to Kostovic’s confidence at Wimbledon.”

A surprising provocation from a young Serbian debutante ignited the start of Wimbledon, but Aryna Sabalenka, the world number 1 and four-time Grand Slam champion, made sure to dispel any doubts about who rules the sacred grass of London. With sarcasm and a disarming smile, the Belarusian responded to Teodora Kostovic's boldness, who had openly challenged the ranking leader before the match, questioning whether Sabalenka could handle her power. In the end, the clash proved to be a relentless stroll for the favorite, who won decisively 6-2, 6-3 in just over an hour.

The young Serbian, only 19 years old and without prior experience in grass tournaments, had surprised everyone by stating, “I want to face Sabalenka. Let's see if she can handle my power. Of course, I can beat her. I can beat anyone when I'm inspired.” The match took place on the legendary Centre Court, where Kostovic indeed had the opportunity to measure her strength against the best in the world, but it quickly became apparent the difference in pace and competitive maturity.

The importance of this match goes beyond the mere result. For Sabalenka, it was not only a debut at Wimbledon after the bitter elimination of the previous year against Amanda Anisimova, but also a return to competition after some doubts raised by her defeat in the quarter-finals at Roland Garros. The convincing victory, in front of an enthusiastic crowd that gave her the loudest ovation of the day, serves as a clear affirmation that the Belarusian is in great form and determined to win the title that eluded her.

At the press conference following the match, Sabalenka seized the opportunity to humorously address Kostovic's words: “I only realized after the match what she said,” she revealed. “It’s so funny. Anyway. I think she said she wanted to see if I could handle her power (laughs)… so scary. It’s good that she has that self-confidence. It’s a positive thing to have.” The tennis player went even further, downplaying the importance of mind games: “I don’t usually pay much attention, to be honest, to the quotes from my opponents. Sometimes statements can be misleading and taken out of context. I really try to stay away from that side of the game,” explained the world number one.

Despite her evident superiority, Sabalenka acknowledged that the early rounds of a Grand Slam are always potential traps. “I’m glad I was able to close this match in two sets,” she stated, visibly relieved. The victory allowed her to secure her place in the second round, where she will face McCartney Kessler, a 26-year-old American who crushed Oleksandra Oliynykova 6-0, 6-0 in her opening match.

Looking to the future, Sabalenka knows that the challenges will only increase. If she continues to win, she could face an explosive showdown in the fourth round against Naomi Osaka, another four-time Grand Slam champion. Before that, she must get past Kessler, a player she already defeated at Indian Wells earlier this year, although it was far from an easy match, especially in the first set. Sabalenka, who turned to her sports psychologist again after her fall in Paris to regain her confidence, now feels mentally prepared for the challenges at Wimbledon: “We all have nerves. We just try to push them away. I think with experience I've learned to deal with it better,” she confided.

Expectations are high for the second-round clash, where Sabalenka will look to maintain her overwhelming momentum and solidify her status as the top favorite for the title. With renewed confidence and sharp sarcasm, the world number one shows that it’s not enough to talk — she must prove it on the court. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how far the Belarusian leader can go in this Wimbledon, which promises intense emotions.
