Back injury forces Seamus Power to withdraw from John Deere Classic.

The dream of Seamus Power winning his third title on the PGA Tour turned into a nightmare at the John Deere Classic, where a back injury forced the Irishman to withdraw prematurely from the $8.8 million tournament. After a promising start that suggested another moment of glory, Power fell victim to a stunning turnaround in his performance, finishing the first round with a disastrous score that left everything in suspense and raised doubts about his immediate future in the competition.

The Irish golfer, who has been on the PGA Tour since 2017 and has already claimed two victories, began his participation in the John Deere Classic, taking place at TPC Deere Run, with two birdies in the first nine holes, showing excellent form. However, the scenario changed drastically on the second nine: Power made consecutive bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes, and, even worse, accumulated three consecutive double bogeys on holes 15, 16, and 17, finishing with a total of six strokes over par (77). According to the tournament organizers, “Seamus Power withdrew after the first round of the John Deere Classic due to a back injury,” as announced by PGA Tour Communications in a post on social media platform X on July 2, 2026.

This abrupt withdrawal raises serious concerns regarding Power's physical condition, especially since the Irishman has been dealing with recurring back and hip problems since 2023. This season, Power has only made the cut in 10 of the 14 tournaments he has participated in and has only once reached the top 10, at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, in partnership with Matti Schmid. His inconsistent performance was already a subject of analysis, but the withdrawal in Illinois further amplifies the uncertainty surrounding the athlete.

The context could not have been more challenging for Power. While the Irishman struggled with evident pain, Lucas Glover (the 2021 winner) and Zac Blair took the lead, finishing the opening round with an impressive 63 (-8), numbers that underscore the demanding nature of the course and the need for low rounds to remain in contention for the title. Power's final result, worsened by mistakes at the end of the round, effectively dictated his elimination even before the decision to withdraw, making it inevitable for him to pull out due to his physical inability to compete at the highest level for four days.

Seamus Power's decision to continue until the end of the first round, despite the pain and drop in performance, reflects the courage and spirit of sacrifice of the player. However, it is also a warning sign for those facing persistent injuries. Power himself has experienced similar situations: in 2024, he withdrew from the RSM Classic due to back problems, and in June 2025, he left the RBC Canadian Open after just nine holes, always for the same reason. Cases like that of Tiger Woods, whose career has been marked by injuries, or Jason Day, who has 12 professional withdrawals due to physical issues but managed to handle the situation and win 13 titles on the PGA Tour, show that managing these situations is crucial for prolonging a career and remaining competitive.

Seamus Power himself, in justifying his absence, acknowledged the limitation: “I tried to hold on until the end, but I realized it wouldn’t be sustainable to continue competing under these conditions,” the Irishman stated as he left the field, visibly frustrated. This statement illustrates the dilemma faced by many elite athletes, forced to weigh the risk of aggravating an injury against the desire to continue competing and fighting for victories.

With this new setback, Power is compelled to redefine his priorities and focus on a complete recovery to avoid further prolonged interruptions in his campaign. His absence from the John Deere Classic will allow rivals to gain ground, while the Irishman will need to concentrate on rehabilitation and a more robust physical preparation, lest he jeopardize the rest of the season. For now, there remains uncertainty about how quickly he can return to full competition and whether he can overcome this negative cycle of injuries. The next chapter of his career will largely depend on his ability to manage his health and regain peak form in an increasingly demanding and unforgiving circuit for those who falter.
