Rafael Jodar has just etched his name in the history of Spanish tennis by becoming only the third teenager from Spain, in the Open Era, to reach the third round of Wimbledon, matching the achievements of legends like Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz. This feat is further highlighted by the fact that it was achieved in an epic showdown against compatriot Pablo Carreño Busta, which extended over two days due to a lack of light, concluding after three hours and 43 minutes of pure intensity, with the scores of 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, and 6-4 favoring the 19-year-old.
The match, held between Monday and Tuesday, was interrupted when Jodar was trailing two sets to one, but the young player showed remarkable maturity by recovering not only physically but also mentally to turn the result in his favor. In the press conference after the match, Jodar did not hide his admiration and respect for compatriots Nadal and Alcaraz, both two-time Wimbledon champions. “Rafa Nadal has been a role model for me in tennis since I was a child. I used to watch all his matches, all the Grand Slams, all the victories he achieved throughout his career. So, it is very inspiring for young players in Spain to see someone like Rafa, or even Carlos Alcaraz, playing so well on these stages. These players are references for us. I feel very grateful to be from the same country as them,” Jodar emphasized before the media.

The importance of this victory and Jodar's journey at Wimbledon goes far beyond symbolism. By reaching the third round in his debut year at the tournament – without even having gone through qualifications in any Grand Slam before this year's Australian Open – Jodar establishes himself as one of the great promises in world tennis. His meteoric rise has already earned him an ATP title, the Grand Prix Hassan II in Morocco, and appearances in the decisive stages of other major tournaments, such as the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open and the quarter-finals of Madrid, Rome, and Roland Garros, where only Alexander Zverev, the champion, stopped him.
The context could not be more challenging: Carlos Alcaraz, absent from Wimbledon due to a wrist injury, had already been forced to miss Roland Garros. Spanish tennis is thus placing its hopes on Jodar to maintain the legacy of success on the circuit. He himself acknowledges the difficulty but does not hide his ambition: “I knew I had to prepare my body for the next day because I was at a disadvantage. But I believed in my chances. I believed I could, you know, recover and win the fourth set and then the fifth. And that's what happened,” explained the young player, demonstrating an uncommon resilience for his age.
In the next round, Rafael Jodar will face Japanese player Shintaro Mochizuki, in a match that could propel him into a dream clash with world number one, Jannik Sinner, should both advance to the fourth round. Expectations are high, especially since Jodar has already crossed paths with Sinner in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Masters, where the Italian came out on top. “I started quite well this morning, I think, and I knew the conditions were different, so I had to adapt. But it was the same for him. So, the conditions were equal for both. I did a great job from when the match stopped last night until I stepped onto the court this morning,” Jodar added, showing a pragmatic and confident approach.
The journey of the young Spaniard has not been without obstacles. Before Wimbledon, he was forced to withdraw from the Queens Club Championships due to an abdominal injury. Nevertheless, his record on clay has been impressive, with titles and consistent appearances in the main draws of the world's top tournaments. Now, on grass and at the Cathedral of tennis, Jodar shows he is ready to continue surprising and establishing himself as the next big name in Spanish tennis.
What follows could be crucial not only for Rafael Jodar's career but also for the future of tennis in Spain. If he can maintain the level he has shown and overcome Mochizuki, the clash with Sinner could serve as a true barometer for his ambitions on the circuit. For now, Jodar has already captured the attention of the tennis world and is starting to gain idol status among a new generation. The pressure will increase, but as he has already proven, it is in the toughest moments that true champions reveal themselves.
