The smile of a three-year-old boy went viral and symbolized the weight that Lamine Yamal, at just 18 years old, carries on his shoulders: the dream of Spain winning a second World Cup title. Keyne, the younger brother of the Spanish star, was caught on camera celebrating exuberantly after the third goal against Austria, fueling thousands of memes and reactions around the world. While the celebration erupted above ground, Lamine Yamal descended to the underground of the Los Angeles stadium, built 30 meters below the surface due to its proximity to LAX airport, to face a crowd of journalists and microphones.

The young Barcelona prodigy did not hide his emotion when confronted with images of his brother: “I don’t know… it makes me emotional to see my brother happy, and my mother too. He means everything to me. It’s like he’s my son; I’m in love with him,” confessed Lamine Yamal, visibly touched by the family bond. The Spanish international once again took on the responsibility of leading a national team laden with expectations, but he does so with the ease of someone who has felt the weight of fame since he was 13. “I’ve taken on too many responsibilities from a very young age,” he recently admitted to El País, recalling how media exposure marked him early on.

The 3-0 victory over Austria, which secured Spain's passage to the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup, served to reinforce Lamine Yamal's status as an icon of a generation. In every stadium, the atmosphere changes whenever the ball reaches his feet. Spanish fans feel an intense identification with the young player from humble beginnings, whose image resonates throughout the country. With every sprint, with every dribble, a roar of hope can be heard, as if the entire fate of the team depends on his actions.

Despite his youth, Lamine Yamal has become the emotional barometer of the Spanish squad. He himself acknowledged that the group stage was merely a warm-up: “I used these games to feel like myself again. If Spain plays like it knows how, no one can match us,” he assured before the knockout stage began. The team's response was swift. Against Austria, their superiority was evident, with the full-backs attacking aggressively, Dani Olmo finding space, and Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice, earning repeated praise from coach Luis de la Fuente: “It was almost perfect.”

However, even in a high-level collective performance, it seems inevitable that everything will ultimately revolve around Lamine Yamal. Before the initial whistle, he was seen chatting with the young mascot of the match, in a gesture of empathy. In the end, he lifted the man of the match award after an electrifying display, featuring two nutmegs and an intense physical duel with Konrad Laimer. When questioned about his apparent lack of enthusiasm, the forward responded clearly: “Obviously, I’m very happy, especially because we progressed. Little by little, I’m feeling better, gaining rhythm, taking more risks with my dribbles. This is what the World Cup is about: no one wants to go home now, and we will do everything to prevent that. I am 100% available to play every minute the coach wants,” Lamine Yamal assured, to De la Fuente's satisfaction.

The young player further emphasized the significance of experiencing a World Cup: “I really appreciate the affection I receive in every stadium. There is nothing better in football than a World Cup, and when a child dreams of playing football, they dream of this. I enjoy every moment, from leaving the hotel. I am 18 years old and I am at a World Cup; this doesn’t happen again. We do not fear any team; we are Spain. We believe in ourselves.”

Regarding how he handles pressure, Lamine Yamal revealed the secret to his calmness: “I focus on playing football and spend a lot of time with my family. They are the only ones who know me just as Lamine, who I am,” explained the young player, showing that despite his stardom, he keeps his feet on the ground thanks to his family roots.
