Jannik Sinner faces increasing uncertainty regarding his participation in the US Open as concerns about his physical condition intensify. The Italian tennis player, currently ranked number one in the world, withdrew from the Cincinnati Masters due to a right knee injury and has not competed since his victory at Wimbledon. Without any positive updates on his recovery, doubts about his presence in Flushing Meadows are growing.

After celebrating his 25th birthday, Sinner returned to Turin and held a closed-door training session at the Circolo della Stampa Sporting, focusing on recovering from his injury. According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sinner will only travel to New York if he is 100% recovered, but current signs are not encouraging. His team is proceeding with utmost caution, avoiding rushing his recovery just to compete in the US Open, as they do not want the knee injury to worsen, which could jeopardize the remainder of his season.

The young Italian's physical condition has raised concerns, especially following his withdrawal in Cincinnati, which highlighted the need for more recovery time. If he manages to compete in the US Open, even if not fully fit, Sinner would still be seen as one of the main contenders for the title. His ability to surprise should not be underestimated, even without having participated in hard court events before the Grand Slam, just as he did not compete in grass tournaments before winning Wimbledon.

Interestingly, even if Sinner fails to perform at the US Open, his position as the number one in the rankings is not in immediate jeopardy. There is a 5,290-point gap between him and the second-placed Carlos Alcaraz. If he does not play in Flushing Meadows, he will lose 1,300 points for having reached the final the previous year, but that will not be enough to dethrone him from the top. However, Sinner wishes to compete, as he has the opportunity to win another title, especially in an edition that could be wide open due to uncertainties surrounding Alcaraz's participation and Novak Djokovic's form.

Renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou expressed his concerns regarding Sinner's condition, emphasizing that knee injuries can add pressure and compromise preparations for the tournament. He stated, “Am I worried about Jannik? Yes and no. I'm not worried in the sense that he will arrive at a Grand Slam without playing. He did that at Wimbledon and won. But the pressure at a Grand Slam is high.”

Mouratoglou recommends that Sinner rest his knee and avoid the courts for now, highlighting the need to be efficient and not spend too much time training to ensure he can face opponents at full strength. With uncertainty surrounding the participation of both Sinner and Alcaraz, the upcoming edition of the US Open promises to be one of the most unpredictable and exciting in recent years, potentially paving the way for new champions.
