Novak Djokovic opened his heart about the secrets that make his relationship with Jelena, his childhood sweetheart, so enduring. Married since 2014, the couple has shared over two decades of love and mutual support, and now, with Djokovic entering the final phase of his career, their personal experiences take on new meaning. At this moment, the tennis player is focused on promoting his documentary, “Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter,” which will be released next Thursday, August 20, and promises to offer a new perspective on his private life.

The Serbian tennis player emphasized the importance of communication, honesty, and transparency in his relationship. He shared with PEOPLE: “Like in any other relationship, it requires sacrifice. It takes a lot of commitment and growing together.” Djokovic also admitted that, despite the challenges they face as a couple, these three elements have been crucial in strengthening their bond. Reflecting on his experience, he warned that “the more you keep inside, the more the monster grows,” highlighting the importance of addressing issues before they become insurmountable.

Jelena, who frequently shares romantic moments with her husband on social media, describes him as a complex man, comparing him to characters from great literary works, such as the famous Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy from Jane Austen's “Pride and Prejudice.” The couple met during their teenage years in Serbia, reconnecting later when Djokovic moved back to Serbia and Jelena went to Italy to study. After nine years of dating, they got engaged in 2013 and married the following year. Together, they are parents to Stefan, 12, and Tara, 8.

Djokovic also expressed his gratitude for Jelena's ability to keep the family united during his absences due to his demanding sports career. He acknowledges that he has sometimes missed important moments with his children, such as their birthdays, but he wishes to be as present as possible when he is home. “I have deep respect and admiration for her for taking care of the house and the children in my absence,” he concluded.

As Djokovic prepares for the US Open, which will begin on August 30, his family life and relationship with Jelena seem to be a source of strength and motivation, not only on the court but also off it. The way the tennis player balances his personal life with his sports career will be a crucial element as his journey in tennis continues.
