Prepare for an unprecedented spectacle in the world of mixed martial arts! Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano have joined forces with Jake Paul to produce an event that promises to be a true revolution this summer. In a surprising announcement on Tuesday, the two iconic pioneers of women’s MMA confirmed that they will face off in an epic bout on May 16, marking the debut of the first live MMA card streamed on Netflix.

The highly anticipated showdown between Rousey and Carano will take place in the featherweight division, with a limit of 65 kilograms, at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles. The promotion of this historic event will be managed by Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, which has distinguished itself not only as a fighting entity but also as an influential promoter of sports events.

Ronda Rousey, at 39 years old, is undeniably one of the biggest draws in MMA and one of the most influential athletes in history. An Olympic medalist in judo, Rousey transformed her skills into a meteoric career as a professional fighter, playing a crucial role in opening the doors of the UFC for women under the leadership of Dana White. After winning the Strikeforce title in 2012, Rousey (12-2) not only brought her championship belt to the UFC but also successfully defended it six consecutive times between 2013 and 2015, becoming a globally recognized figure.

However, her dominance came to an end with shocking losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes, which resulted in her retirement from MMA and her transition to professional wrestling in WWE. In 2018, Rousey made history by becoming the first woman to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Gina Carano, at 43, was the biggest star in women’s MMA before Rousey’s rise. In 2007, Carano and Julie Kedzie headlined the first televised women’s fight on Showtime. Two years later, Carano (7-1) made history again by becoming one of the first women to headline a major MMA event, although she was defeated by Cris Cyborg by TKO in the first round of that title fight.

After her only loss, Carano stepped away from MMA and embraced a career in film, securing roles in major franchises such as “Fast & Furious,” Marvel, and “Star Wars.” The intersection between these two legends of the sport has always been a topic of speculation and desire among fans, with the UFC unsuccessfully attempting to bring Carano back to the octagon for a showdown of epic proportions, particularly in 2014.

Recently, the situation began to change. Both fighters have started to hint at a return to training activities by the end of 2025. Carano’s coach, John Wood, from Syndicate MMA, revealed in December that Carano was testing the waters for a possible comeback. “I got a call a few months ago saying she wanted to get back in shape and had a small desire to compete again. I said, ‘Absolutely,'” Wood told Ariel Helwani’s show.

“Why wouldn’t you want to have a living legend who paved the way for many women and fighters in general? [Carano] deserves the respect she has earned. It’s amazing to have her in the gym… When you are a true fighter, and Gina is, that never goes away. Once you start to realize, ‘Oh wow, I can still do this’ — and she can, she definitely still has the ‘power.’

With more information about the Rousey vs. Carano matchup and Netflix’s debut in live MMA expected to be released in the coming weeks, anticipation is only growing. Get ready, because the fight of your lives may be closer than ever!
