Canada suffers major setback: Alphonso Davies misses historic debut at the 2026 World Cup on home soil

Canada’s dream of shining in its first World Cup at home has taken a severe blow with the confirmation that Alphonso Davies, the team’s star and captain, will miss the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. Considered one of the best left-backs in the world when healthy, Davies has been plagued by an unfortunate string of injuries that threaten to compromise his participation in the World Cup.

Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch revealed in an interview with CBC that Davies will not be on the field for the opening game on June 12, but assured that the defender will be available for the subsequent group matches. “No, he will not play in the first game. But he will play in the tournament,” Marsch stated, adding that the management of the player will be handled carefully to ensure he is fit for the second or third game of the group stage.

The problem dates back to an injury to the left hamstring sustained during the Champions League semifinal on May 6, in the match between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain. Since then, Davies has missed the end of Bayern’s season, including the DFB-Pokal final, as well as the last friendly matches for Canada.

Despite the setback, Marsch remains optimistic about Davies’ return and believes that his presence will be crucial for the team’s continuity in the World Cup. “We will analyze his condition step by step, but the captain will be ready to play after the first match of the group stage,” the coach emphasized.

Canada’s schedule in Group B also includes clashes with Qatar on June 18 in Vancouver and two UEFA teams, making Davies’ recovery even more vital for the host nation’s aspirations.

The absence of this Bayern Munich talent in the World Cup opener represents a huge challenge for Canada, which relies on its captain to lead the team in a competition that marks a historic moment for Canadian football. There is hope that Davies can overcome the physical difficulties and return strong to help Les Rouges aim high in 2026.
