The future of Arne Slot at the helm of Liverpool is at stake, and the pressure on him increases with every game. The Dutch coach admitted that there are no “guarantees” he will remain in charge if the team fails to secure a spot in the next edition of the Champions League. In recent statements, Slot compared his situation to that of Jürgen Klopp, who, despite a disappointing end to the 2022-23 season, received the backing of the club’s management. But will history repeat itself for him?
Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool icon and Sky Sports commentator, did not hold back in stating that Slot has no “safety net” if the team fails to secure a top-five finish, especially after an investment of €450 million in the last transfer window. The pressure mounts following the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield, a result that left Liverpool four points adrift of Chelsea in fifth place.
“That’s a difficult question to answer because I’m not the one who decides my future,” Slot said when asked if his continuation depended on participation in the Champions League. However, he recalled how the management retained Klopp after the season in which Liverpool finished fifth. “The only thing I know is that this has happened before, and it didn’t affect that coach’s future,” Slot noted, although he emphasized that this “doesn’t guarantee anything, of course.”
Slot acknowledges that this is undoubtedly the most challenging season of his coaching career. “By far,” he stated when asked if this was his most complicated time. “In other seasons, there were only positive things. I have never lost two games in a row before. This season is an exception for me, just as it is for the players. They are not used to losing or drawing much.”
The reality is that Slot’s team faces a tough road to secure a place in the Champions League. Carragher did not hide his frustration, stating that it is “a long journey” for Liverpool to recover and finish in the top five. “At the moment, I don’t see how they will manage,” Carragher said. “They would need to have a massive turnaround in form. Looking at the table, it seems that Liverpool has a long way to go to get into the Champions League qualifying positions.”
With pressure mounting and expectations fading, Slot will need to make crucial decisions regarding his team’s formation and find a way to turn the situation around. Time is running out, and Liverpool’s future under his leadership may depend on his ability to change the tide and save the season through impressive performances in the competitions they are still involved in.
