Mikel Arteta puts Arsenal at the top of Europe: “We can be proud of a historic achievement”
Arsenal is back in the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season, a feat that has not occurred at the club for 140 years. Following a 0-0 draw at home against Sporting CP, which secured their place in the quarter-finals with an aggregate score of 1-0, manager Mikel Arteta did not hide his pride and satisfaction with his team’s performance.
“It’s a fantastic night, I am extremely proud of everyone at the club,” began the Spanish coach, who is leading Arsenal during one of the most glorious phases in its recent history. “I thank our fans for the passionate way they supported the team. Reaching the semi-finals two seasons in a row is something we have never done in 140 years, which shows the difficulty and magnitude of what we have achieved.”
Arteta also emphasized the importance of valuing this moment: “At this moment it may not seem like it, but in a few years we will understand how extraordinary this was. You cannot underestimate what we have achieved, because it is something very difficult to accomplish and unprecedented for us. I am immensely grateful to the players and everyone who contributed to this achievement.”
Despite the success, the coach remains grounded and acknowledges the need for evolution to aim even higher. “We are not perfect; we want to improve in every aspect, but we have two magical nights ahead against Atlético de Madrid. We will prepare ourselves to the maximum for these decisive matches.”
Regarding the clash with the Spaniards, Arteta expressed confidence: “We will analyze everything we learned from the game in October and their recent matches. We need to go to Madrid, be our best version, and compete as we have been doing. If we do that, we will have a great opportunity to win the competition.”
As for the performance against the Sporting, the coach provided a pragmatic analysis: “The Champions League is a competition where details make all the difference. We had moments to kill off the tie, but we couldn’t. The game was always open, but we controlled it well, especially in the second half, where we didn’t allow dangerous shots from the opposing team, except for one long throw-in at the end. It was a solid performance.”
Finally, Arteta emphasized the importance of recovering players to maintain the level: “We need to improve in some areas, and for that, it is essential that some players return. Other than that, it was an excellent night.”
With this historic qualification, Arsenal reinforces its ambition to once again dominate European football, under the leadership of Mikel Arteta, who continues to prove that he is building a team capable of dreaming of ultimate glory. The battle with Atlético de Madrid promises to be epic and could define the club’s future in this dream season.
