Bologna suffered a cruel defeat against Aston Villa in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, losing 3-1 at the Renato Dall’Ara. The Italian team, which appeared to dominate the game in the first 45 minutes, was completely undone by childish defensive errors that proved costly and left them with a tough task of overturning the result in the second leg at Villa Park.

Lewis Ferguson, one of the standout performers on the pitch, did not hide his frustration while analyzing his team’s performance. The Scottish midfielder, who had a clear chance to open the scoring, deemed the outcome unfair given the control they exerted in the first half. “We knew we were going to face a huge challenge; Villa is a very strong team, but I think we dominated the first half,” he revealed in statements to Sky Sport Italia. However, the team could not prevent a goal conceded from a corner, where a lapse in concentration was fatal: “We conceded from a corner; we knew they were dangerous in those situations, and I’m sad that we conceded a goal like that when we were playing so well. In the second half, we paid for another avoidable mistake that complicated our situation even more.”

Ferguson, despite the adverse result, remained firm and confident for the second leg: “We have nothing to lose at Villa Park.” The midfielder also emphasized the importance of details in high-level football: “It’s the details that decide games at this level, and today we saw that difference. Perhaps that is the big difference between us and the Aston Villa.”

On Bologna’s side, Federico Bernardeschi did not hold back in his harsh criticisms. The experienced Italian international took responsibility and demanded more professionalism from the team: “The truth is that you cannot make these mistakes in Europe.” Bernardeschi stressed that Bologna is not inferior to the Aston Villa, but that a lack of concentration at crucial moments proved fatal: “I believe that Bologna is in no way inferior to Villa, but the details make the difference; we cannot make mistakes, and we were punished for three clear errors.”

The veteran player was incisive when discussing the third goal conceded, a moment he deemed completely avoidable: “This game has to be a learning moment. We need to mature, grow, and believe that if we want to make a leap in quality, we cannot make these kinds of mistakes.”

The lesson of the night is a tough one for Bologna: a promising first half, three serious defensive errors, and a result that complicates their continuation in the competition. The Italian team now faces the difficult task of recovering a two-goal deficit away from home, in a tie that promises to be a brutal test of their capacity for evolution and European resilience. The pressure is now on Vincenzo Italiano and his players to ensure that this setback serves as a catalyst for an epic turnaround in England.
