After a devastating defeat in the semifinal of the Copa del Rey against Atlético de Madrid, Deco, the sporting director of Barcelona, did not hold back in criticizing his players. The outcome of the match, with an impressive 4-0 in favor of the hosts, left fans in shock, and Deco got straight to the point regarding the lack of intensity displayed by his team.
“In the first half, it was difficult. The pitch didn’t help us, but that’s no excuse. In the second half, we improved, we won more balls. Then, we could have made it 4-1 with the disallowed goal from (Pau) Cubarsí,” Deco lamented, reflecting on the highs and lows of the match. With frustration evident, he questioned the team’s delay in realizing that the goal had been disallowed: “I don’t know if it took them ten minutes to realize there was offside. But that’s no excuse.”
Deco continued his analysis, emphasizing the urgent need for greater commitment. “This team has previously shown that it is capable of turning around complicated situations. For now, we have to focus on the league. If we play with the necessary intensity, we can try to win in Girona, but if we play like we did in the first half, it will be difficult,” he warned.
His statements went beyond a simple criticism. Deco pointed directly at the players, emphasizing that “it’s a matter of intensity.” Acknowledging the quality of Atlético, who strengthened during the winter transfer market, he stressed that Barcelona failed to approach the first half adequately, but there is still hope for the second leg: “This is just the first game of the tie, and we will see what happens.”
With a remarkable history of comebacks at Camp Nou, Deco believes that playing at home, on a pitch in better condition than the one on Thursday, his team has everything to try for victory. Hopes remain, but Deco’s words serve as a warning to the players: intensity and determination are crucial to overcoming this challenge. The pressure is mounting, and the next opportunity for redemption is just around the corner.
