Gianluca Prestianni, the young talent just 20 years old from Benfica, faces a suspension that will prevent him from participating in the crucial second leg of the Champions League against Real Madrid. The decision came after allegations of racial abuse made by Brazilian star Vinicius Junior during the first leg of the tie, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Merengues. Tensions escalated when Vinicius claimed he was subjected to racial slurs after celebrating his goal, prompting the referee to halt the match and activate the anti-racism protocol, which lasted about 10 minutes.
Players from Real Madrid, including Kylian Mbappé, showed support for Vinicius, while Prestianni and Benfica vehemently denied the allegations. The young player claimed that Vinicius had misunderstood him and expressed regret over the threats he received from Real Madrid players, stating: “I have never been racist and I regret the threats I received.”
UEFA has decided to impose a provisional suspension on Prestianni, which was announced on February 23, just two days before the anticipated clash at Santiago Bernabéu. The governing body of European football has initiated an investigation into allegations of discriminatory behavior, and in the meantime, the player will miss the crucial match. Benfica has expressed its intention to appeal the decision, although it acknowledges that the appeal may not have an immediate impact given the proximity of the game.
UEFA stated: “Following the appointment of a UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to investigate allegations of discriminatory behavior during the match between SL Benfica and Real Madrid CF, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has decided to provisionally suspend Mr. Gianluca Prestianni for a violation of Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.” The body also noted that this decision does not prejudice any future sanction that may be imposed following the conclusion of the investigation.
If Prestianni is found guilty, he could face a suspension of up to 10 matches, which would be a devastating blow to his future at the club and his career. Benfica, for its part, reaffirmed its commitment to fighting discrimination, citing the historical figure of Eusébio, a club legend, and emphasizing that the fight against racism is a fundamental part of its identity.
The incident prompted strong reactions, including a post from Vinicius on social media, where he described the racists as “cowards” and criticized the lack of punishment for such acts. Mbappé and Aurelien Tchouameni also spoke out, claiming they heard Prestianni utter racial slurs, while he defended himself by saying he was misinterpreted and that, in fact, he directed a homophobic insult at Vinicius.
With the UEFA investigation ongoing, Gianluca Prestianni’s future in European football hangs in the balance. Pressure is mounting, and the football community is eagerly awaiting the outcome of this case, which not only affects the player’s career but also raises crucial questions about racism in sport. UEFA’s final response may not only determine Prestianni’s sanction but also impact how European football addresses issues of discrimination in the future.
