The world of football is in turmoil and emotions are running high, especially with the recent statements from Hansi Flick, the coach of Barcelona, regarding the imminent clash in the Champions League against Newcastle United. Flick did not hold back in praising the opposing team, describing them as a “fantastic team,” as he prepares for a showdown that promises to be electrifying in the knockout stage.
“Every game is important. I’m not celebrating not facing PSG; we have to respect our opponents. Everyone wants to reach the final, and Newcastle also wants to win the Champions League. All opponents are tough. Newcastle United has a fantastic team, and we saw that when we played there,” Flick stated with the confidence characteristic of a high-level coach.
In his analysis, the coach made a point of not underestimating the quality of other clubs in the competition. He mentioned that if Barcelona overcomes Newcastle, they will face a formidable opponent, whether it be Tottenham Hotspur or Atlético de Madrid, both with a solid reputation and a high-quality squad. “All the clubs in the Champions League are very good and have great quality. Playing against Atlético or Tottenham, if we manage to advance, will also be very difficult,” he added.
Barcelona, which had already faced Newcastle in the group stage, winning 2-1 at St. James Park, does not let history influence them. Flick emphasized the importance of maintaining humility and focus, especially after a rare two-week break without matches, during which he had the opportunity to work intensively with his team: “These last two weeks have been important, but in the end, it all comes down to how we play in the match and how we approach the duels against our opponents.”
Eric Garcia, one of the players, confirmed that this break was welcome, especially in light of the difficulties faced in the last encounter with Villarreal, where the team struggled to maintain possession. Flick acknowledged that preparation is crucial, but that the true test will be on the field: “We have seven games before the international break, and tomorrow is the first opportunity to start well.”
Asked whether his team is in the best form of the season, Flick responded emphatically: “If you had asked me before Atlético, I would have said yes. We are focused on what we can improve and on our objectives. This is a young team, and winning games builds confidence, and this team needs that.”
Furthermore, Flick expressed his satisfaction in reaching the milestone of 100 games in charge of Barcelona: “It is an honor to reach 100 games with Barça. I enjoy every day at the club, with the coaching staff, with the players, with the fans…” Regarding his relationship with president Laporta, Flick was diplomatic: “The event with Laporta was a private event, but we are not in as much contact. I try to respect that and wish him all the best.”
Meanwhile, Villarreal arrives at Camp Nou in good form, sitting in third place in the table, but under the leadership of Marcelino Garcia Toral, the team is still looking to overcome the difficulties it faced against the top giants, with four losses in four encounters.
Tension and excitement are rising as the Champions League progresses and teams prepare to fight for a place in the history of European football. What is at stake is more than just a game; it is glory, honor, and consecration in the most prestigious club competition in the world.
