Rúben Amorim has raised eyebrows by stating that Christian Pulisic is “perfect” for his Milan and that he will do everything to keep Luka Modric in the squad, revealing tactical details that cast doubt on the future of Rafael Leão. The comments came during the first press conference of the new coach of the Rossoneri, held this afternoon, where he was accompanied by RedBird owner Gerry Cardinale.
Confronted with the future of two influential players who are reconsidering their careers after the World Cup, Amorim did not hide his confidence in Pulisic and Modric. Regarding the American international, the Portuguese coach said: “Pulisic is a very talented player; of course, he had another injury during the World Cup that we need to evaluate.” Amorim explained how he envisions the winger fitting into his system: “He is perfect for the way I think about football, especially here in Italy where, at times, teams defend so well and there is less space between the lines; he is a player who can make a difference in that type of space.”

Questioned about Pulisic's ideal position, Amorim smiled and shrugged, admitting: “I have a clear idea of where I want to put him to play, especially with his right foot on the left, it’s the perfect position for him, he can also play on the other side, inside and not on the line.” This approach indicates a possible strategic shift, as Pulisic has almost always played on the right due to the presence of Rafael Leão on the opposite flank, suggesting that the American may finally be prioritized on the left side.
The Portuguese coach reinforced his unwavering confidence in Pulisic following criticism directed at the player: “I know Pulisic's strengths well, I believe in him, he will be supported at our club. I know he faced some criticism after the World Cup elimination, but I am here to say that we believe in him a lot. We have a clear plan to make the most of all his qualities, so I can say that Pulisic is very important for us.”
Regarding Luka Modric, Amorim made it clear that he is not giving up on the Croatian, despite uncertainties surrounding his future, retirement, or a possible transfer to MLS. “Modric is a player we want to keep for his experience. I have spoken to him twice, and if necessary, I will go get him,” Amorim confessed, emphasizing the midfielder's importance: “He played very well, he is a key point for us, especially at the beginning to have more possession. I’m not saying he will play every game, but we really want to count on Modric for next season.” He also revealed ongoing conversations: “I know the management has spoken to Modric, I have spoken to Modric, so I hope to have him with us soon. I will give him a few days to rest.”
Amorim's words suggest profound changes in Milan's structure, focusing on a more dynamic style of play and maximizing the talent of Pulisic and the experience of Modric. It remains to be seen how these decisions will shape the immediate future of the squad, especially regarding Rafael Leão's role and the retention of international stars under the new coach's command.
