Rúben Amorim surprised many by stating that he feels “sorry” for Manchester United fans and assured that he has no intention of following in José Mourinho's footsteps, thus marking a clear break from the recent past. The new AC Milan coach addressed the media this afternoon, responding candidly to questions about the mistakes made at Old Trafford and his expectations for the future in Italy.

The 41-year-old Portuguese coach returns to the spotlight after being dismissed from Manchester United in January, now taking the helm at Milan. When asked at the press conference about what he learned from the negative experience in England, Amorim was straightforward: “It's hard to explain the mistakes because I would have to explain the context of the last adventure, and I am the coach of Milan, so I talk about Milan. I can only say that I learned a lot, and I made mistakes.” Demonstrating a rare moment of vulnerability, Amorim added: “I didn't have the opportunity, and I regret that, to say something to the Manchester United fans. I was very proud to be their coach for a year, but this is a different story. There are many things I could have done better in that experience, but sometimes life is like that; you have to learn and find the right place to reach another level. That is my thinking here.”

The coach did not hide that he hopes to emerge stronger from the turbulent period in England, emphasizing the importance of evolving through difficulties: “Everyone learns from experiences; there are things that can never be changed, but I think I will be a better coach because of it. That's all.”

Amorim succeeds Allegri, who was dismissed after failing to qualify for the Champions League with Milan. Confronted with Gerry Cardinale's public criticisms of Allegri's defensive approach and his choice of Amorim to bet on a team “that wants to win and not just try not to lose,” the new coach refused to fuel controversies: “I can say how I want to play. I know where they want to go, but I have great respect for Mister Allegri, no one more than me; he is very experienced. I will not talk about the past, about how Milan played. I can talk about how I want us to play.”

Defining his philosophy, Amorim was clear: “We want the ball, we want to dominate the opponent. I know this team can defend very well; we have different ideas, and that is normal; every coach has different ideas. I can change by seeing my players up close; they can give me ideas, but I can talk about the principles. The principles are to want to win the ball back quickly, to entertain the fans, to be exciting to watch. When training great teams, you cannot escape the responsibility of winning; a draw is like losing, and that is what we will do: try to score goals and be dominant.”

Regarding any potential comparison with José Mourinho, who succeeded in Italy, Amorim rejected any parallels: “No, I am completely different from José Mourinho. I am a different person, I obviously learn a lot from him, but as a coach, we have to follow our own personality; we cannot copy anyone. I have a different style of play, I hope to win as he did in Italy, that is the only thing I want to be the same! I have a lot of respect for Mourinho, I can call him a friend, but I am completely different. Don’t expect that from me. Sometimes I get upset with a loss and say things I shouldn’t.”

The Portuguese coach also emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes: “I learned from all the mistakes I made in Manchester. I learned a lot. I will try to improve on the small details, help my players to be better, and I also hope to win more games than I draw. I won’t talk about losing games, because that communication will be easy if we are winning.”
