John Terry expresses frustration over absence from the Chelsea coaching position.

John Terry, the Chelsea legend, expressed his frustration after being excluded from the group of interim coaches who took charge of the senior team following the departure of Enzo Maresca in early January. With Maresca’s departure coinciding with New Year’s Day, it became evident that the club was not fully prepared for this sudden and decisive change.

At the time of the coach’s departure, Chelsea did not have an immediate replacement, and while there may have been some candidates in mind, it was clear that it would take time to find a new head coach. During this transitional period, Chelsea’s under-21 coach, Calum McFarlane, was tasked with leading the senior team, supported by his assistants Andy Ross and James Simmonds, analyst Adam Keep, and set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva. Surprisingly, Terry, who has held a consultancy role with the under-21 and under-18 teams since 2021, was not included in the list for this responsibility.

McFarlane ended up guiding the team in two matches, against Manchester City and Fulham, before joining Liam Rosenior’s coaching staff as assistant manager of the first team. Terry, in statements to GOLF LIFE, expressed his disbelief over his exclusion from the interim role, as he, like McFarlane and others, was part of the coaching staff for the under-21s. “I’m not upset,” the Chelsea icon began. “I’m probably more frustrated because I was part of that group of under-21 coaches that was promoted to the senior team. Even though I wasn’t the one in charge… of course, Calum took over and did well. I feel I should have been included.”

He continued, emphasizing the importance of decision-making in sports management: “Listen, people have to make decisions. I love when people make choices and say yes or no. Clearly, the ownership or whoever made those decisions, including the sporting directors, decided that I shouldn’t be included for some reason. Why? I don’t know.”

Despite his frustration, Terry takes great pleasure in his role in talent development at Chelsea. “I’m at the academy, as you know,” he added. “I’m working with the under-18s and under-21s. I love my role there. It’s like a part-time job.”

With his vast experience and emotional connection to the club, John Terry’s absence from the interim structure raises questions about the dynamics and decisions at the level of sports management at Chelsea. Fans and analysts will be watching closely for the next steps of the former captain and the future of the club, as the search for a new head coach continues to stir emotions at Stamford Bridge.
