Bruno Fernandes, the Portuguese icon of Manchester United, continues to be one of the main focal points in the football world, especially with speculation surrounding his future at the club. Recently, former teammate and current national team player José Fonte made strong statements that could influence the attacking midfielder’s decision. What did Fonte say about Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford?

José Fonte had no doubts in advising Fernandes to stay at Manchester United, despite ongoing links to a possible departure. Since arriving at the club in January 2020 from Sporting CP, Fernandes has been one of the team’s cornerstones, standing out as the most influential player in the Premier League. So far this season, the 31-year-old has scored seven goals and provided 17 assists in 29 matches, a performance that has not gone unnoticed.

“It’s very complicated to speak for someone else. Me? I would stay 100%,” Fonte said during an interview with talkSPORT. He praised the club’s journey under the leadership of Michael Carrick and highlighted the greatness of Manchester United. “Bruno is becoming, if he isn’t already, a legend at Man Utd. He loves the city, he loves the club. He is thriving again, so why not stay until the end of his career? It’s one of the best clubs in the world,” he added.

Fonte’s statements come at a time when Manchester United has also made it clear that they have no intention of selling their Portuguese star. The Daily Mail reported that the club is determined to keep Fernandes in their ranks during the summer transfer window. It is important to note that Fernandes has a release clause of £56.68 million, which can be triggered by foreign clubs. While European teams may hesitate to invest that amount in a 31-year-old player, teams from the Saudi Pro League are willing to make a significant offer for a Premier League star like Fernandes.

The current interim manager of Manchester United, Michael Carrick, has also expressed his desire to keep Fernandes at the club. “Bruno is definitely someone we wouldn’t want to lose. It’s complicated for me to go into too many details about the future, but he is important for us,” Carrick stated on the club’s official website, emphasizing the player’s significance in building the team for the future.

With Fernandes’ contract set to expire in 2027, along with an option for a one-year extension, the coming months will be crucial. The future of the Portuguese star at Manchester United looks promising, but movements in the transfer market can quickly change the dynamics. The pressure is on the club to ensure that Fernandes continues to shine at Old Trafford, where he has been making history.
