Napoli returned to winning ways in style, thrashing AC Monza 4-1 at the Stadio Brianteo after a run of four away games without a victory. This win is only their second in the last nine Serie A matches played on a Wednesday, allowing the Neapolitans to breathe a sigh of relief after a difficult start to the season.
Rudi Garcia’s side took to the pitch determined to turn their fortunes around, especially after what had been their worst start to a league campaign in 17 years. Giovanni Di Lorenzo was the first to shine, delivering a pinpoint pass to Rasmus Hojlund, who put Napoli ahead with an accurate finish. However, the first half was not entirely dominated by the visitors, as Monza showed that, despite their position in the table, they are capable of causing problems. Foe Ondoa nearly scored with a powerful shot that hit the base of the post, and Serie A’s top scorer, Gustavo Varela, saw Vanja Milinkovic-Savic deny him twice. Varela did eventually score, though, turning in a cross from Jay Robinson to level the match before the interval.
After the break, Napoli quickly regained the lead. A defensive error from Monza allowed Matteo Politano to seize the opportunity, getting into the box and finishing with precision. From then on, the visitors were relentless, and Rafa Marin made it 3-1 by diverting a corner into the net. Kevin De Bruyne, who came on as a substitute, sealed the rout by receiving a pass from Noa Lang and finishing between the legs of goalkeeper Noel Tornqvist, continuing his excellent form.
With this win, Napoli re-establish themselves as contenders for European qualification, although they are still 11 points behind leaders Inter Milan and Lazio, after only nine matches played. Monza, meanwhile, find themselves in a difficult situation, having made the worst start in their Serie A history. Noa Lang’s performance was singled out, and he was named man of the match, reflecting his influence on the final result.
