Lamine Yamal breaks impressive record of Kylian Mbappé in the Champions League.

Last night, Barcelona’s young prodigy, Lamine Yamal, made history by breaking a remarkable record set by Kylian Mbappé in the Champions League, in a performance that left fans ecstatic. At just 18 years and 248 days old, Yamal became the youngest player to score 10 goals in the competition, surpassing the previous record established by Mbappé, who reached that milestone at 18 years and 350 days during his time at Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain.

Yamal’s historic feat occurred at Camp Nou, during stoppage time of the first half, when he calmly converted a penalty, putting Barcelona ahead 3-2. This goal, crucial for his team’s victory, served as a redemptive moment for the young player, who had previously made a mistake that allowed Newcastle to equalize the match in the 28th minute.

The penalty converted by Yamal not only secured Barcelona’s victory in the match but was also one of many goals the team scored in the second half, resulting in a staggering 8-3 aggregate win that allowed them to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Yamal has not only surpassed Mbappé in the history books but has also become the youngest player to score in consecutive knockout stage matches of the Champions League. In the previous match at St James’ Park, he also scored a crucial goal, converting a penalty in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw for Barcelona on a night that would otherwise have been disappointing for the Spanish champions.

Although the two penalties that marked Yamal’s career lacked the flair typical of his open-play goals, they showcased his calmness under pressure and his ability to finish with precision. With this latest achievement, Yamal has broken three Champions League records in just eight days, including becoming the youngest player to reach 30 appearances in the competition.

At 18 years old, Yamal has already won almost everything in Spanish football. He was a key player in Barcelona’s treble-winning season last year and also helped the team secure the La Liga title for 2022-23, despite making only one senior appearance that year. This year, he contributed to the victory in the Spanish Super Cup and is one of the main reasons why Barcelona leads the La Liga race, with a four-point advantage over Real Madrid.

However, there is a significant gap in their resume: the title of the Champions League. Barcelona has set its primary objective to win this prestigious trophy in the 2025-26 season, after coming just one step away from the final in the last edition, being eliminated in the semi-finals by the Inter Milan. The last title of the Champions League for Catalonia dates back to 2015, which was also the last time the team reached a final in the competition.

With all the talents in the hands of Hansi Flick, none of his star players have yet managed to achieve European glory while wearing the blaugrana shirt. Although players like Yamal and Pedri have many years ahead to accomplish this monumental feat, Barcelona fans are tired of waiting for a new era of triumphs in Europe.
