Barcelona is in the midst of an electoral marathon, with Joan Laporta and Victor Font as the main candidates for the club’s presidency. While Font promises to take action against Real Madrid TV and the CTA, Laporta remains the favorite and, this afternoon, unveiled his new pre-candidacy headquarters, revealing the slogan of his campaign: ‘Defensem o Barça’ (Let’s defend Barça). This new approach is an evolution of his victorious motto from 2021, ‘Estimem el Barça’ (Let’s love Barça), and comes at a tumultuous time following the controversial 2-1 defeat to Girona.
At an event that was inevitably influenced by recent sporting events, Laporta took the opportunity to express his unwavering support for the work of Hansi Flick and the resilience of the team. “We defend Barça to enjoy sporting success,” he stated. “We have a treasure of people in the Barça locker room, with homegrown players and others from abroad who are performing well thanks to Flick and Deco.”
Laporta did not hesitate to express optimism regarding the conquest of La Liga, stating: “I am certain that we will win La Liga. It will be a league against everything and everyone, because they do not only want to defeat us on the pitch.” He added that there are circles of power that do not wish for the club’s success. “They want to beat us off the field as well, that is obvious,” he said.
Recognizing the team’s recent dip in form, Laporta attributed it to the intense match schedule, emphasizing that “it is normal to experience a drop in form.” He recalled that when the team faces difficulties, others try to take advantage of the situation, referencing the incident involving Koundé. “We will reverse the situation and regain our style of play,” promised the president, assuring fans that the team is focused.
Laporta, who is seeking re-election, highlighted the successes of his administration, mentioning that in the last five years they have won three Cups, two Leagues, and three Super Cups. “We have won the last three finals against Real Madrid. And that is fantastic! That is why I am convinced that we will win the League,” he stated confidently.
In addition, Laporta emphasized the need to protect the institution. “We defend Barça against those who never rest, power circles that try to corner us,” he explained. He criticized the inconsistent use of technology in refereeing decisions, stating that “it is incomprehensible that, now, with so much technological support, it is sometimes used and sometimes not.”
Regarding the future, Laporta made an appeal for unity among the club’s members. “This is the proposal I am leading to further consolidate Barça as the best sports institution in the world,” he said. “I call on all members to continue defending Barça in the coming years with the strength of our history and our essence.”
Laporta did not hesitate to refute the idea that the club’s recovery is a matter of chance, highlighting that “what has been achieved is not a miracle; it is the result of daily work and courageous decisions.” He stressed the importance of institutional stability for the team’s continued growth.
Finally, the president issued a strong warning to his political rivals, including Victor Font, stating that “you cannot manage Barça like a business.” He cautioned against handing the club over to inexperienced leadership, making it clear that it is essential to prevent Barça from falling into the hands of those who could repeat the mistakes of the past. “We have to be smart, because those who do not support us are also smart,” concluded Laporta, reflecting on his journey thus far.
