Michael Carrick is in his final days as Manchester United manager, in a situation that has gone from being a question of confidence to a question of time. After an emergency meeting at Carrington, led by Jason Wilcox and attended by Jim Ratcliffe by video, the club has set a strict timeline to decide the manager’s future.

Manchester United now face two crucial matches, against Chelsea and Aston Villa, before the November international break, which has become the “guillotine” that will decide Carrick’s fate. This will be his last opportunity, while the search for a successor is already under way behind the scenes.

According to the British website TEAMtalk, sources inside the club have confirmed that the international break, which begins on 9 November, has been identified as the ideal time to assess the manager’s situation.

The emergency meeting at Carrington

The sharp decline in the team’s level and results prompted a decisive meeting last week at the Carrington training centre. At that meeting, sporting director Jason Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and head of recruitment Christopher Vivell analysed the team’s deteriorating situation. Sir Jim Ratcliffe joined the discussion by video, which shows the gravity of the situation.

Eddie Howe, Nagelsmann and Conte on the list of successors

At the meeting, the options to succeed Carrick were carefully examined, should the club opt to dismiss him. Eddie Howe, the former Newcastle United manager, emerges as Wilcox’s preferred choice and the most prominent option if a change is made. Sources confirmed that financial compensation would not be an obstacle to appointing Howe.

On the other hand, Christopher Vivell is pushing strongly for the signing of German Julian Nagelsmann, while the possibility of bringing in Italian Antonio Conte has also been acknowledged in the club’s corridors.

Why Carrick is staying, for now

Despite the growing pressure, Manchester United have decided to keep Carrick in charge for the next match, against Chelsea, and he is likely to remain in charge for the game against Aston Villa. The decision rests on two main reasons.

The first is the club’s desire to avoid appointing an interim manager for a long period, preferring to avoid short-term solutions. The second is the significant backing of Wilcox, who was a key figure in Carrick’s appointment and wants to see him succeed and establish himself as a long-term solution.

However, that backing cannot override the demands of the job indefinitely. Keeping Carrick in charge until now does not guarantee his future after these two matches. His position remains the subject of intense debate, and results and performance have become decisive.

Carrick will therefore have one last opportunity to provoke a positive reaction from the team. Even so, sources inside the club admit that a change remains the most likely outcome, with the November international break offering the ideal moment to act and appoint a permanent successor, should there be no radical improvement against Chelsea and Aston Villa.
